typically squash, pumpkin or bottle gourd are used as a root stock to watermelon. this conveys many resistances to the plant.

An idea to breed for good rootstock is to take a cutting off a vigorous plant place it into tap water with 4 drops of liquid fertilizer. come back in a week and see how it did without interference from you (like root hormone),then select for the best rooters.
