2009 SEED TRIALS

Hello everyone. While i'm not set up yet for next years trials... i am starting to take names for those who are interested in voulenteering.

I'll be sending seeds out all at one time this year instead of spacing it out over several months like i have in years past. In this forumn i intend to trial all of the veggies i usually do singlely in others. Simply because we don't have very many members in here. It'll be tomatoes, peppers, cukes, melons, squash, corn, peas, beans, and eggplants right now. For those of you who voulenteer i won't be expecting germination reports.. regular updates would be nice, simply a season end description of how these do will be expected, perhaps your opinion about em, and a picture which isn't required.. but would be nice. Now i'm still going to be continuing my tomato trials from 2008 in another forumn since this years crops at my place were a bust.. and i was the only one trialing all of em. But anyone interested i have these left from last year plus about a thousand more varieties which i may or may not put into the spreadsheet.
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pWtDheex3Pv1j3D3e_mCoLA&gid=0
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pWtDheex3Pv1j3D3e_mCoLA&gid=1

I'll also be adding this years tomato reports to the spreadsheet as i get more help.

For the peppers, beans and everything else.. i'll be making up new spreadsheets for those over the winter as this thing gets set up. I have aproximately 1000 varieties of peppers, 1000 of beans, and hundreds of everything else. Certainly enough to spread around.. and certainly more than i can possibly trial on my own.

For those of you who don't already know.. i'm intending to start a new seed company next fall. The results of these tests will be used when we get the website set up. Not all of em will be listed for sale.. and not all of em will be used for next years seed increases either. But i would expect that anyone receiving seeds that does do their own seed increases would offer them to sale back to me. And that you wouldn't use em for trading or other sales for a year until after i can get em offered myself... unless of course they're already widely distrubuted. Most of these will be quite rare for the time being... and those are the ones i'd like to be the first to offer em publicly.

Now, if anyone is interested.. PM me and i will start putting together the list of voulenteers. Let me know what you'd like to trial, how much space you intend to use, and any preferences you'd have such as tomato size, plant types, etc.

I'm not gonna promise i'll send any specific varieties to anyone.. simply because i will be deciding what i need trialed and i can't just send the same things to everyone. Some will be duplicated some won't.

At the end of the trials, i will be contacting each and every participant and asking for you to post your results right back here where i can gather the information. Don't PM me anything that will be usefull for everyone else that wants to know about these varieties. Place the reports and pictures in this thread. Personal PM's are fine.. but anything usefull to everyone put in here.

I guess that's it. I'll be mailing samples out probably Dec-Jan and that'll be it.

Hey Dave,

What would your stance be on newly bred OP types from individual breeders.

Say for example:
Mer De Noms, La Mer (noir), Le Soliel, La Luna

Think there would be interest in this type of original material for the new company?

Absolutely Alan..

I got nothing against hybrids, so new open pollinated varieties would be something i'd definately be interested in. I Know some seedsavers are sticklers about having to call everything heirlooms and what not. But to me a good open pollinated variety is definately something I'd like. I'd think most of Tom Wagners varietys aren't actually considered heirlooms by most people.. but look how many people love his creations.

Now are ya interested in having me put some seeds into this years trials? I think i still got some leftover Mer de Noms i can use, or were ya just thinking of skipping that step and just getting me the info and pics and wanting to make me a deal on some quantitys of seed? And allowing me to use em for one of my first listings. I have no idea how quickly the new seed company will take off. It might take awhile before ya start seeing google banners up on top of this forumn for me.. and i have no idea how many sites like Dave's garden i'll get it listed in at first. So, i'm figuring i could start small the first year. Might even get by with 30-50 packets of seeds on some of the listings.

Cff.. got the PM.. i'll be in touch with ya. Anyone else that's interested can ya please get me some details about what ya want to trial.. or if you're interested in doing an increase, and how much area you want to use for this. It might make a difference as to how many varieties i can send ya.. and how much seed for each.

I'm gonna be picking up some more organza bags and toulle netting this winter in bulk for my own breeding and increases next year.. and if any of ya need some i might be able to send some of em at my cost. Sorry i just can't afford to buy ya all the materials ya might want to use.

But, back to your question alan.. definately i'd be interested in anything ya had in mind. I'd even do hybrids.. but right now my emphasis is on open pollinated simply because anyone can do seed increases with em with just a little help.

[smellycat]Hey Dave,
As far as the garlic is concerned. Just send what you want to have grown out for selling. If you need to use it for a trade then do what you need to do. Its only going to keep the vampires away thats all.

Nothing else is new in the past day or so. Tilled up the rest of the plot for the garlic. Oh, will the garlic be labled? We had a frost here in SW MN. It took my mater plants to their resting place. Black seems to be the color. I have to get the rest of my root crops up soon. It will end soon right?

Do you know how long it takes to have carrots go to seed? It seems like forever. I want to try to save some this year. But it doesnt look good. I have had some of my carrots in the ground since april.

Maybe this is a question for your club?

Chat soon.

Michelle

Hope you're staying warm. We got mice coming into the house right and left... and there's two cats here. I'm feeding one of em old corn seeds from back in 1998. Bout em off ebay for cheap.. but they're useless to grow. Only things i got out of em was the radishes. Those things live forever.. ya want some? I got bout 10 lbs of bout 6 or 7 varieties.

Hey i was wondering if you could go over to alans site for this years trials. That's the only forumn i'm gonna be doing every vegetable on. This one here just isn't equipped to handle all the PM's.. ya know if my PM is full ya can always post to my profile page. Anyways.. that's where i'm keeping track of everything... i'll even post your lists.. I don't got the one for garlic made up yet but it's 35 varities so far... i didn't get to the last thirty till the mail was going. And everyone's packages are 9 oz so far. Yours FlowerPowers and Johnos... those two know how to grow it.. i don't. I just get the stuff. Anyways.. i'll post your list over in my trials. If ya want to know what they are.. everyone can read em. The cloves are numbered with sharpie. You'll figure it out. I gotta ask someone if it's too late to plant now where i am. Or if it'd even be ok to wait till spring. I could loose em to mice or something by then.. that's gonna be a long ways off. But, don't worry i don't use em for trade.. they're to heavy to trade with. Maybe for a lb of beans or something. Hey would anyone like to try some beans Randall sent me. No label.. they're just a baggie full of black beans.

Anyways.. i'm rambling again. Before this message gets too long, here's everyones list more or less. It was odd numbers most of the time so i split em with one or two of ya.

Here ya go:

WELL THAT'S IT FOR THIS SHIPMENT... STILL GOT 30 MORE VARIETIES FOR ANYONE IN WHATEVER ZONE YA NEED TO BE IN TO GROW THIS SOONER. I FIGURE TWO YEARS. YA CAN EAT IT IF YA WANT. YA GOTTA TRY IT AT LEAST.

OK seriously now.. someboby tell me how ya grow this stuff. I'll be at Alans all winter.
Better cut it short for now.. Michelle.. takes carrots two years. Collect the seed next year from whatever roots you get to overwinter. Should be early in the year if i recall right.. but they take forever to die off and they get all buggy. Have fun...

Anyone besides Michelle want to give it a go with some of my old corn seeds? Here's my leftovers from last year.

With the peppers. I had two hot pepper plants. One was a tam Jalapeno and the other some type of cherry hot pepper. No there wasn not any tall crops between them. There were however tons of flowers right next to, in back of and in front of the pepper patch. I can tell you that I didn't see any bees by the peppers( I didnt watch 24/7 either) this year because of all the flowers. Oh well. I'll grow some next year. The seeds I want to save are Tollis' sweet Italian Pepper. The peppers are some of the best I have ever grown and the flavor is wonderful.

Hey I got a question for you. Do you eat any thing you grow or do you just save it for the seeds? I know you take the seeds out of tomatoes for your mom. Do you eat any of your produce?

I'll keep this short too.. save the Tollis'.. the other one's only 40/lb anyways. I buy those all winter long.

Welp.. PM me anyone.. it may be too late for garlic.. but corn's got plenty of time. And i got 2000 tomato and 1000 pepper varieties to get out before spring.

Stay warm everyone...

CFF and Jim..

Ya can see what ya got to work with there.. who wants to try what? Johno or Michel want to split some up? Don't want any trades.... but i'll buy whatever ya can grow back from ya. Try and make it alot. Can't pay but cheap wholesale prices when i first start up the corp.. but if i can sell alot.. i can buy more from ya. I'd just need a few to get my site started.. and pictures.. lots and lots of pictures. I haven't even gotten out my experimental corn yet. i got another 200 varieites i think in a bunch of 20 seed packets. No names.. just lists of genes and heritages.. i was going for the Japomonic trait. Ya know the one for ornamental corn... that way someone can sell the stocks.

Anyways.. everyone.. if ya don't leave a message here i may miss ya come time to ship these out. it may be a while before i get enough stamps.

Dave

PS.. why don't ya put your own lists in here... and save me the work. Choose whatever ya want.. whatevers leftover everyone can see. I got ahold of ten acres of farmland i might be able to use next year.. but i still got way too many seeds for myself. Some of ya have gotta help me out here. some things i really need to do increases on.. others like carrots and radishes i get all day long for two bucks a lb at MVseed. So i'm probably gonna be using their prices when i figure out what to pay anyone. It's the cheapest place i know of for bulk seeds.

Anyways.. Ya all got my address..

Dave

Ok.. now anyone want to sign up? Tell me what you want to grow and i'll make ya a list just like i did with the corn. i need increases on all beans, corn, peppers, and tomatoes... maybe cukes, melons, squash, and eggplants. Oh definately eggplants.. i couldn't get mine to even flower this year. Nice plants buy no blossoms.. maybe i'll go see if they're still alive and dig one or two up and put em in the windows.

I do need stamps though to get this started. First preferences will go to those who pay for the postage. And if you are serious about selling em back to me.. i'll need pictures and descriptions posted by ya on a regular basis so that i can get em into the website by fall. If it's too late i won't be able to start on time. Anyone got suggestions bout how to start a website?

I'm having a trial in the threads where we can talk bout stuff.. but i don't think i'll be shipping garlic to belgium. I'll ship ya tomatoes and peppers all winter if ya can grow those though. Just tell me when it's time for you to start your indoor plants and give me at least a month's notice till it gets to ya.

I just need everyone to do me a favor and post both with these PMs and by posting in the threads. If ya can't post regularly in there it's no help at all. This is a test for everyone to see if they can keep their promises. I just like to be able to find out next year what we all everyone talked about. PM's just don't work for discussions.. great for personal messages though.

Jeff.. instead of trading why don't ya help me grow some of these trial seeds out. i'll be glad to buy whatever of your own varieties you want to sell from increases too.. as long as i can't get em cheaper somewhere else like mountan valley seed by the pounds.

Not all my varieties are rare.. some are really popular.. and really cheap to buy.

Let me know what ya think.. i just don't really have alot of time for trading.. sure i'll take anything ya want to send.. but i kinda got my hands full just shipping right now. i gotta get all the bubble mailers and stuff from the dollar store yet. My old stock is running low.

Anyways.. that's where you'll find me is in the threads... between the threads actually.. also in my business one.

Orflo.. how are ya at growing carrots? Something tells me you'd be pretty good at it. Want some of the dozen or so varieties i got? Only bout half of em i got by the pound.. but even small envelopes of carrot seed sows alot.

LMK everyone..

Dave

Dave, I'm willing to grow out whatever you want, I only have some climate restrictions: for instance: only some varieties of eggplants are easy to mature over here, ; as far as carrots are concerned: I have to isolate them because I have the wild carrot surrounding me ;D ;D ;D. Have you got things that don't need a warm and dry summer ( just some examples: almost no peppers this year, , tomatoes with late blight in June,...). So these are always a bit of a risk...Do you want seeds from edible chrisantemum, bunias orientalis, ground cherries (some varieties), tomatillo (4 or 5 var),silene inflata, miltomato vallisto, litchi tomato, pea dwarf grey sugar, chenopodium nuttallii, and I can go on....????
