Sorry about your blighted plants ,Michel. I have had 2 blight attacts by now, the first attact hit the spuds (and some of the TPS ones) and forced me to dig them out earlier then planned and the last one forced me to pull out half of the toms. I still get good crop spuds though lower then it supposed to be... Late blight lives up to it's reputations...lets hope we all have a better summer next year !

Well, apart from Sarpo Mira and Toluca, I have 4 clones from Tom that absolutely don't care about the blight, and probably a fifth one, there is a section I have to visit but from afar, a lil' green spot meant more hope yet.

Michel, I am really sorry to hear about your problems, even if it is helping you to select for resistance. I didn't realize that you were actually selling the crop to help pay expenses. That makes it even worse. It seems like nature has thrown so much at everyone this year. But the, I guess for gardeners 'hope springs eternal'. No matter what kind of year we have, we are still looking forward to the next.

yes, we have not been able to weed since July first ... Here, to prove you I am a clean gardener and can also wash dishes at home : Taken close to the end of June: Obviously, that picture was PhotoChopped ... ;D ... whad' ya' do ... go take pictures of the dirt in Dan & Val's garden and overlay it on your garden? Late blight terrorized my tomato patch last week. Lost half of over 400 tomato plants. Many varieties will never ripen ... had 45 varieties in the ground and am getting fruit off of maybe 10 or so varieties. Some of my favorites will not be able to give me ripened fruit (or seed) ... Guido, Girafe Abricot, Guernsey Pink Blush, Cherokee Purple, Brown Berry ... what a bummer. So much for seed trades this fall ... This is very early for late blight here in Ohio. Normally, we see this in mid to late September and never this widespread. It is at least a month early. We have had a consistently cooler-than-normal summer (very cool, humid nights) and then the rains came along with very high humidity and continued cool weather ... Ka-BOOM ... blossomed in one week and the crop collapsed. It's all global-WARMING's fault ... Our normally hot weather would have suppressed the growth of the blight. This problem is exceptionally problematic in the north eastern US right now. Unusual that it is so early. The Extension office is receiving tons of reports of late blight outbreaks county-wide. At least my Brandywines have producesd bounteously, though! Picked a half bushel of them tonight.

Oh, interestingly enough, my Red Pontiac potatoes are doing fine ... in a separate garden about 200 feet from the tomato patch.

Sandbar, and anyone else that got toasted by the blight this year: Anything that we have seeds available for is yours for the asking when trading time starts. We will post the new list(s) and addresses to them and the albums when they are ready. Trades not required. Cheers Dan & Val

yes I take pictures elsewhere ;D I totally diseagree with this concept of global warming. Climate is fucked up, more than agreed, climate change is not a bad name, maybe, but the one who created the expression GLOBAL warming can lick my friggin' ass while I shit on his stupid face And I hope it happens after a case of beer.... Sorry for venting a bit folks, but I ain't in my best mood these days. Since it has been globally warming, Holly f..... we are freezing our balls... July nights are made to sleep outside naked if you want to, at least they were around here, lots of high 70's you know, and even always some in the 80's and even( but rarely) 90's sometimes. Now they are mostly in the low 50's...some not so rare times in the low 40's. Global warming my ass.... nothing global about it AT ALL, a plot to sell more energy consuming air conditioning systems, fucking the climate even more, or another similar stupid capitalist guizmo. It might be that it happens on a planetary average, but there ain't NOTHING global about it. We live in a type of society where words can easily become symbols, now, with the warming that is supposed to worsen, try to explain to folks they need to quiet down their energy consumption and that more than ever in many places in the northern emisphere, their fancy air conditioning systems are becoming more obsolete by the day... We do not need them anymore here, I haven't use mine for 4 years and now I don't even have any in my new house. On the other hand, we did start the furnace on a few July nights....

Sorry to hear about your plants Mike.........alot of people over here near me have it too.
I noticed yesturday that some of my leaves are turning yellow and getting black spots on them, and i had noticed them on my neighbors a few days ago, and she hasnt done anything, so if its possible that it could have spread, mine now have it! I'm lucky that i've been able to harvest a few seeds before i noticed this (they will be ok for next year, right)?

It is good news, Michel ! By next year you will know what to grow... again I am sorry for your loss ! Well, apart from Sarpo Mira and Toluca, I have 4 clones from Tom that absolutely don't care about the blight, and probably a fifth one, there is a section I have to visit but from afar, a lil' green spot meant more hope yet.

I agree, but I am also the guy distributing the most heirloom potatoes in the country through Seeds of Diversity Canada... I guess many of them are becoming obsolete now....

I know what you mean... next year will be better, Michel, fingers crossed !
I am not sure if it is good to mention this here about the aspirin experiment, but I tried it last year (mix with some small dose of micro sulphate). I still can not take conclude if it really work as I only sprayed 3 times (once a week to 10 days) and after that we went for a month of holiday. The tomato and spuds got no disease during spraying time yet it was very warm and humid around june and july last year (some of the potato leaves get burnt though either due to the aspiring or the micro sulphate). The spuds haulms were dried up when we were home (august) ,but I never know when and if they ever develop any disease... The tomatoes only get some late blight around mid september, again I can not draw any conclution because I have no control plant to make comparison.

The pictures of the healthy taters seem to make quite an impact, even with some govermental organisations, have been travelling the world through the net,I am not at liberty to say more, but it is fair to say we will not be that unknown for our work very ever more.
I might even be better talking in the past mode.... we are3 known now.
Cheers to Tom Wagner, many millions of moms will have healthy childrens because of his work and also to the generosity of this incredible place. His vibrant genious would not have gone to Europe without all the wonderful friendship here, and none of us would have been enriched if he had been a selfish researcher.
Cheers to love and care too. In brief, cheers to us.
And cheers to Tim Peters, he is spearheading a revolution that will also feed poor people like nobody ever did. .
This little place will help change the world.
Love you all folks
Michel

So many things I was planning myself are already being done, by people whos ultimate goal isnt money. This is a good thing for the human race. WE HAVE THE KEYS. lets open the doors.
