We are getting out of raising hogs. I don't want to do it, but husband does.
I'm having a hard time accepting this and need something to look forward to? So I thought I would ask what to do with the pigyard when it's empty? A few years ago, in between breeding stock, we had a few months where their yard was vacant. The weeds grew quickly. I don't want that to happen. I'd like to put something in it. Something low maintenance perhaps Or something that would be useful elsewhere on the farm.
I suppose I could grow a yard full of sunflowers?? Despite it's dusty state, it's well manured and there is a pile right next to it thats available for almost immediate use.
Any other suggestions??

Why am not surprised at your suggestion?? Very Sweet..but no thanks. I had goats back in the early 90's. They ate the leaves off the trees. They ate flowers. But they wouldn't eat any of the weeds or scrub area vegetation that we got them for. There is a wolf run through the back of the farm and they could probably smell it, cuz they wouldn't go back there for love nor money..
No, I'm appreciative of your quick response, but I'm thinking more along the lines of something that doesn't need to be fed twice a day or milked or chased down the road or off the neighbours lawn.
Maybe I'll just use the space to grow giant veggies or Rouge vif d'etampes for halloween sales.

Nice looking goats! Boers?
Blue, there are a lot of things that would love to grow out there. Could you sell cut flowers where you live? Might be lucrative?..
Maybe you could get a dozer out there, scrape the whole yard into one giant mound (compete with a moat for easy watering,) and grow the Great Pumpkin Of The North?!
Blue and the Giant Beanstalk?
The biggest Three Sisters hill in the world?

Oh, I believe Johno may be on to something! How could Blue resist a pumpkin patch with a moat?! She'd need a crown, and a scepter, of course... And Bob and the chickens could be her adoring courtiers. Oh, the picture I have in my mind, Blue!! ;D

I'd go with a cleaning crop such as sunflowers, winter squashes (punkins), taters, leeks, etc., since it sounds like you will get a nice crop of weeds the first couple of years of cultivation.
Either that, or cover crops such as buckwheat or rye

A Giant Pumpkin Hill with a self watering moat below. How positively ingenious my subjects..Oops, I mean fellow HOmegroaners, LOL
But yes, I do believe that it would be a good place to grow a few giants. I've quit the club, but doesn't mean I have to stop growing the big ones. I've still got seed, including pumpkins, cantaloupe, watermelon and long gourds...Plus my own acquisition from this year of several varieties of tomato that could very well win me something, at least at an agricultural fair; The Dutchman and Jerry's German Giant to name two..

You could always toss in a few Butternut or Acorn Squash and sell them also. I think the Giant Pumpkin is an excellent idea.
