GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr
Last year, it seems to me, that I just threw a handful of seeds in a pot with starter mix, watered it, and the basil grew and grew and grew...
This year, I've started it twice. Both times I'm having issues with damping off. Might be some potting soil in the bottom of the pot.
But I was also wondering if perhaps I hadn't started the basil this early last year and maybe had waited until it was warm enough to put the pot out in the porch to get it going??
Or maybe I actually started it in something smaller (sans potting soil...which I know is part of the problem this time around)....
What do you do??

Honestly? I buy started seedlings because I never have enough room to start all the herbs I want, and I know a guy who has good basil. Basil frustrates me, because, like you said, it seems to either go crazy or languish - I never get a happy medium.

blue, i haven't had any trouble starting my basil. i usually plant them in rows in a shallow box filled with pot soil and keep them warm in our loft till they pop-up. then i transplant them from there.
noticed this year that moving them too quickly into a semi heated greenhouse caused some losses. heat may be your problem maybe?
also, if you have a damping off problem, i'd wash thoroughly and maybe bleach or clean the container's innards really good. hope this might help. bunkie.

Bunkie, you might have hit on something I didn't take into consideration? I have them not too far from the picture window in the livingroom. And I noticed this afternoon with the bright sunlight that they were looking a little wilted (as are all my houseplants cuz they need water)..Perhaps they are getting overheated, the poor little dears... I'll move them to another location and see if that helps until they are better established. Thanks Bunkie!!

I planted basil outside for the second time this weekend. I got 0 germination from both types of seeds the first time around. I'm hoping that it was the colder temps and that I'll have sprouts soon. Good luck to us both.

I just resowed again, lol. But this time, in a small pot, with soil-less starter and I watered it with No-Damp. Keeping it out of the window for a while as well. I'll let you know how it goes.

You know, my cuttings didn't take well to the introduction of full sunlight this year when I hardened them off. The African Blue did better than the Genovese.
