What the...??!! ...So does corn normally silk when it's only 6" tall? I will freely admit that i mixed in teosinte and gamma grass seeds along with the corn. Whatever it is i love the red color of the silks, but i'm surprised that any of those three possibilities would silk this early in the season and this early in it's growth cycle. I wish i had corn pollen available for it, but alas i don't. HAHA... wait maybe i have discovered the worlds most perfect dwarf corn... no more stalks... just a cob and two leaves!!!!

Did you plant Painted Mountain corn? Yes, i believe there is some painted mountain in the mix this year. Is this early of silking normal for painted mountain?

I suspected Painted Mountain because it is a very early corn for me, and because it has a wild side to it, and because of the red color of the silks, and because of the purple color on the edge of the leaves, and because one of the photos of Painted Mountain on the breeders web site is a stalk of corn that consists of an ear of corn at ground level with some leaves to support it. seedweneed.com/CornMan-B.ppt (Slide #19) I grew 3 varieties of corn last summer that had cobs as close as 6" to the ground: Painted Mountain was one of them.

Fascinating. Thanks Joseph, it's a very likely possibility. A wild side indeed. I will certainly be keeping an eye on this one. Yeah, i have been hoping to find a variety of corn that has red silks. Red silks is a trait i would very much like to breed into my mix. I hope to see more. P.s. does anyone know of any other varieties that might consistently produce red silks? The only two i have heard of is Double Red (sweet) which may have Ruby Queen in it's ancestry. Anyway, thanks again for the info Joseph. I don't think I've ever seen a cob grow that low on a stalk before.

P.s. does anyone know of any other varieties that might consistently produce red silks? I've got lots of red silks showing up. (LISP Ashworth and Painted Mountain are two varieties that I have photos of that show red silks on at least some plants) Here's hoping that I remember to flag some for you this summer. I'll provide the red silks, you can work on the consistency. Last year I also grew "Michael's White Midget corn". The whole plant was only about 2 feet tall. Here's what "LISP Ashworth" looked like last summer. (Yes, I crawled along the ground to pick them because I really don't like bending over.)

Last year I had several Painted Mountain corn tassels which had normally developed corn kernels on them.

Love what you used for scale Joseph. You didn't mention your shoe size though. From now on, it'll be black boots for scale - lady's size 8-9.

Mens size 12W, 13" long (33 cm). That's a bigger size than store clerks recommend for me, but I hurt my foot a decade ago, and since then I can't stand to have any tightness at all in my shoes. If I take a photo with sandals for scale they will only be about 11.5" long.

Good to know I am always stuck when it comes to scale as I most of the time, I take pictures on the spur of the moment or I'm disorganized, you choose. Anyhow, I love the boot idea.
