Lovely, even if it is a little under-ripe. I too have great difficulty deciding on time to harvest. I look at all the usual signs but it's not always accurate.

That's why I much prefer other melons, types which slip when ripe and those which become fragrant so I can judge ripeness. Somebody develop a watermelon that smells strongly of watermelon!

I like Blacktail Mountain watermelon because it turns dark green when ripe.
Hmmm. A fragrant watermelon. I imagine that would involve thin skin, which might result in poor shipping qualities, bad storage, and susceptibility to insects.. Could be doable though as a personal project.

DSCN5579 by skrubtudse, on Flickr Harvested the first watermelon from greenhouse today ;D It is my hybrid, and weigh 3 kg (aprox. 6 pounds) I still have a lot to learn about watermelons, so different from melons. I find it difficult to know when to harvest. This maybe should have waited a few days more on the wine. A little more in my blog: toads.wordpress.com/2011/08/05/watermelon-harvest/ With watermelons, you almost have to plant the same variety repeatedly to learn the signs as to when it ripens. If you plant different varieties every year, it's hard to ever learn when they ripen because they are all different.

I ordered the seeds (Gift of the Sun) from: www.seemnemaailm.ee. This variety looks beautiful outside but I wouldn´t grow it next year for its flesh, taste. Of all 10 varieties we degustated with the guests, Gift of the Sun recieved the minimum approval. Attachments:

The majority´s favourite watermelon turned out to be Yellow Jade because of its sugarsweet taste, very thin rind, lovely appearance... Of all red fleshed melons I loved most Sweet Favorite (as last year), also KaChi 8. And I regard orange fleshed Orange Sweet as the most delicate, very sweet - my favourite melon of this summer... so far. There are yet some varieties growing, so later on probarbly I can tell which tastes best for me.
