Stevil....
My Nordic series started when I had to name a red potato from the cross of Nor Donna to Red October. I brought the variety with me from Bakersfield, CA in 2004 and it was a seedling during the 1999 season. Since my plots were on farms of Norwegian heritage and that I have Norwegian Viking blood from my Manx grandfather...I thought it fitting to have the name Nordic. I had harvested the variety during October also. The name signifies the cross direction....Nordic from Nor Donna the female parent, and October from the male parent Red October.
Nor Donna was bred by Bob Johansen of North Dakota and he is of Norwegian ancestry. Dr. Johansen was a prolific breeder and developed many potato varieties at North ... They all carry the prefix “Nor.” Norchip, Norgold, Norland, NorDonna, and Russet Norkotah. The Red October is a variety I made between Fontenot and ND2912-2R. Looking back in the ancestry of Nordic October for 10 generations or more show no Scandinavian ancestry.
I appreciate what the Norwegian Genetic Resource Center is doing to clean up the varieties but.....Boy, are they slow. No tubers to release until next year?
I will refer the the link below to reference potatoes from the Nordic countries that I have had or have now. I am converting the tuber collections into TPS. I have offered TPS of some of them this season...Kiva,, Lady Krokar, etc. The ones in bold print are, or have been in my collection.

I have offered many of these potatoes in the past...not too many interested in them but I persist in growing them for TPS. Some fail for me for berry production, therefore my TPS of Nordic lines are prolific berry producers as the generations descend. Potato varieties such as FJELLFINN are difficult to save unless purposeful crosses are made due to: Flower frequency: Very rare...Pollen fertility: Sterile. My best tuber line from FJELLFINN is my Jelly Gold.
So, Stevil, my goal is not to conserve those 50 odd potato varieties excepting those times when I have a tuber or two to share....my goal is to blow the diversity sky-high with TPS. The beauty of TPS is that you can explore the past generations and project new generations with that same TPS.
The interest in TPS in my website constitutes some validation for the dogged attention to detail that has been part of my life for nearly 60 years. Tater mating is an obsession and what I am doing is illegal in many countries and has been frowned upon in my own country by the many potato professionals; tolerated by a few, and rarely encouraged by any.

btw...I will be growing about a half dozen Nordic lines from newly received mini tubers/tissue cultured lines...Troll, Ottar, Bjorna, Sort Fra Aukrust, Jamtlands Vit, Rutt and Mandel. Finding the energy to plant those and 250 or more other lines from around the world will tax my energy.
