promenadeplantings.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/003.jpg1066 has the F-2 Howie Mandel seedlings looking good as per the above link. Thanks...I like to see this family once again and this time across the pond. I am impressed of the uniformity of the seedlings....quite the rounded leaflets of JTK in the picture.......stem coloration will darken shortly after transplating in the field and that will link to skin colors. I will be putting my F-2 Howie Mandels out soon. I did plant about 7 hills of the original Howie Mandel two days ago on some early ground. I will plant the balance where I can be available more often to make crosses. I was rather disappointed to see in the bag that I had sent the larger tubers out to several folks here in the states. Good thing I re-sown more of the cross that made the Howie Mandel; Mandel x John Tom Kaighin. I should have about 15 or more of those TPS seedlings to re-select for the HM type. Also I am planting new mini tubers (virus free) of Mandel and a couple of JTK from Atash in a breeding block. I want to make as much hybrid seed as possible for the future. Because of the flavor of the backgrounds I hope to back cross grandchild siblings to JTK and Mandel and all kinds of related half sibs and half cousins. Swedish Peanut: I really like the flavor of Mandel but ...Oh, what a poor yielder it is.....maybe I can break the yield problem soon. Hoping to make the Mandel potato not the potato to go to for flavor but as a vestigial heirloom namesake. A major effort will be to bring more and more late blight resistance into the Howie Mandel. Hi Tom Interesting to hear about the colour deepening as they get older. You know it's a pleasure to report back on your seeds and their progress this side of the pond.
I've been a bit surprised at how slowly they have grown, since potting on, I don't know why but I was expecting to see more growth more quickly. I'm waiting for a bit more growth so that I feel a bit more confident when I finally plant them out.
And looking at the link you posted, I need to fix the size of my photos - I'm missing my usual software on this laptop, so that's a good reminder to get it fixed!
Once again Tom, thanks for the opportunity to grow these gems!

Is there any chance that the warm spring you are having has had a negative impact on your potatoes 1066?

Is there any chance that the warm spring you are having has had a negative impact on your potatoes 1066? That's a difficult one to say, as it's the 1st time I've tried to grow them, so I'm not really sure what to expect. No matter how much I look up details of them, at pictures etc, I have to apply it all back to my localised growing conditions. But the warm dry spring we are having is impacting on growth, generally things are between 2/3 weeks ahead of normal. Tom - for your info the TPS are about 1/2 a mile from the pier! But when planted out will be a mile ;D They will have a sea view, so I hope they like it! They won't be able to see the pier from where they are but that's just as well as it burnt down last year, and is looking very sorry for itself

Very interesting. I think I mentioned this somewhere else, but we had that extra warm spring last year and very similar results. Last year was my first garlic harvest and though it went well, I learned that I should have waited a couple additional weeks. This year I've postponed the harvest for 4 weeks because the garlic is clearly not as advanced as it was this time last year.

I'm wondering about my garlic harvest too, it's one of my biggest crops, and this year it is nowhere near fat enough, still another month to go before normal harvesting, so maybe some rain will come along in that time. anyway, I'll plant the TPS out next week

I'm uploading photos of all my potato plants to my Facebook page. I've allowed permission for everyone to view it (hopefully). Typically I only allow friends of friends and I have several albums with other plants including alliums.
If you want me to send you copies of the files in a different format, let me know. We got tired toward the end and lazy with some of the photos.

The TPS have been in the ground for a few weeks now, and are looking good, getting bigger and bushier. And as we have finally had some rain I'm expecting them to put on some good growth. These TPS really are "a waiting game" !

Tom, it looks like I just might end up with a few potato berries from Boyd Dude, Fripapa, and a couple of others. What should I do with them? Do you want me to send you any of them?

Yes, Jo, I wouldn't mind getting a few seeds of each of those. I am hoping for some unusual crosses to happen naturally and the the special mix of varieties that you have would be a different sub set than what I have.
By comparing a side by side sowing of yours against mine would give me some idea of valuable outcrossing. Boyd Dude and Fripapa clones close together with the offspring trending towards red skin, yellow flesh is part of what I am looking for. In fact, I should try to make the purposeful cross myself.

How should I pack the berries to mail to you? It seems that there are a few berries on the store bought red potatoes planted in the next row as well. Do you want some of those seed as well?

The best way is the two day priority mailer the size of a video box. I would gladly pay for the $5.25 postage. Put in ziplocks with a bit of rumpled newsprint. Reds? Sure...I could check for outcrossing there too

Things are going a bit crazy. The red berries are lost for this season. I couldn't find any today and they are being harvested right now.
I've got the first flush of photos on my Facebook page along with garlic photos. Nothing was hugely prolific. I think that is because of grass competition as this is the outside row. After viewing the photos, I'd like to know if I can replant the results for a fall harvest? I would probably replant where the garlic is now, unless you suggest otherwise.
I hope HOPE to get berries in mail tomorrow.

The package is made, I'm going to do the click n ship now. I'm not excited about the condition of some of the berries... they really shriveled up. I'm sending them on anyhow in case you have some special magic with them. Thanks for all you do!
