It appears a death certificate was issued for Carl Leon Barnes age 83 of Turpin, OK. I called their number this morning and they still have an answering machine and I left a message. Since I am in Oklahoma, I will keep trying to reach them for the forum and keep you posted. David

I too would love to find a source for some of these seeds. They are beautiful. I grow Painted Mountain, but these are even more lovely. How do they taste?

Edited to correct errors...
I also received glass gem seeds from gray. I'm intending to plant it in an isolated patch for those of you that don't like your food to touch. Once I've increased the seed to share, then I'll incorporate it hodge-podge style into one of my landraces.
In looking at the original photo that started this thread: I'd call this a wild popcorn... There is that pink cob in the middle that I wouldn't expect to pop much if any. I'd expect the other cobs to pop or to mostly pop. Some of the kernels have already popped on some cobs.
The light blue/pink color of some of the pericarps is very nice. The delicate nature of the pericarp coloring allows the aleurone colors to show well. If I were maintaining this line, I would take care to preserve the pink pericarp, and the blue pericarp, and the clear pericarp. I would deselect any cobs in which pericarp color was too intense: for example that dark blue one at the top in which the pericarp color is obscuring the transparency of the interior.
Pericarp color affects every kernel on the cob and is derived from the mother. Aleurone color varies for each kernel based on the pollen donor.
I generally wait to taste flint corns until after they are cooked.

That is one flinty looking flint. I have popped all of my flint corns, but many dont pop well or consistently. Even flour corns will sometimes pop.

I'm a newbie on this board, joined just to leave this msg, but will stay a while cuz I like what I'm seeing so far. Does anyone have seed to share or for purchase? Would love to have this "gem" of a corn! Thanks, Ig(natius) Vigé

Hello all, New to this site from New Mexico. Does anyone have any of this Glass Gem Corn? I have a little extra Cochiti Popcorn, from the Cochiti New Mexico Indian Reservation, to trade if interested? Thanks, Mike

I can't speak for gray, who very generously gave me this seed, but I don't think much is available right now. I actually don't have enough corn growing area to do more than one flint patch and one flour patch so I am not able to grow out the Glass Gem I received and keep it pure. I picked out a sample of it to incorporate into my flint corn proto-landrace and sent the rest on to another HG friend. There should be plenty to go around next fall.

I'm wondering now if Glass Gem isn't getting hyped to be the next cool thing. I just saw it on our facebook feed getting gushed over by Chelsea Green publications and a couple other pages I like. I hope Seeds Trust isn't trying to run a "rare seeds! jack-up-the-price" number. I don't really know anything about Seeds Trust, just seem odd that all these pictures of Glass Gem are showing up all over the place and no one is actually selling it yet.

Folks, Karen passed away before Carl. I last spoke with Carl in 2008 or 2009. At the time he was quite depressed.

AFAIK the only place that theoretically might have it for sale is Seeds Trust, but they don't seem to be selling it. Don't pay too much for it, you ought to be able to get it for free from an HGer by the end of the season.
