I have a little bit of extra seed from the bush cantaloupe that showed up in my garden this summer. Send me a PM with your mailing address if you'd like to try it. It came out of my breeding program, so the parents could be any of 100 varieties of long-vined muskmelon. The next closest pollinator (long-vined) was 12 feet away, and this grew on the end of the row, so there was long-vined pollen running around, but many of them are likely to have been selfed. Collaborators who are not growing any other varieties of C. melo move to the top of the outgoing-priority list: If you'll attempt to grow it in isolation, weed out any long-vined plants, and return a portion of the seed (if any) this fall. (The C. melo species includes Armenian cucumbers, cantaloupes, honeydew, muskmelons, etc. Basically any of the melons other than watermelon.) If they all turn out long-vined, then just grow them out and enjoy the fruits, no weeding necessary. Not really, there will still be weeds, just not muskmelon weeds.

Joseph,
I've seen melons like this growing in a 5 gallon container on a sunny porch here. Too cute.
I'd grow this, but you know, my melon plate runneth over, and I already have to speak to the queen about expanding my farm to get some more isolation area.
The queen is expensive to speak to.

Alas, Then I would not have only committed Regicide, but Matricide as well.
I don't have a committee of democratic citizens to help with my cause.
We call her the queen, because any favor you request, is a magnet to blessings, and is always attached to a purpose and comes with a price.
The price often exceeds the favor, but by then, it's too late.

Joseph, I never grow melons but this one looks like a good space saver type. I can be a collaborator if you need the seeds back. Sign me in... I hope you got the other seeds I sent your way.

Please send me a personal message with your mailing address (again). All you waiters-out-there-on-popcorn: I finalized the popcorn today. Popcorn should be going out soon. (Unless you also requested Moschata. I'm a long way from eating all that squash. I guess I'll have to go ahead and harvest the seeds, then preserve the squash or toss it.)

Holly, so long as you don't commit herbicide, you'll not be prosecuted.

It was interesting to notice that "Johnny's Select" had an article addressed to the question of "Why do you sell Monsanto seeds?" I missed that, where is it?

Confirming shipment of the substantial gratis donation that you requested be sent to a third party. That was mailed a long time ago. The packet of "Paradise se sweet corn" seeds is in the truck waiting for the next time I can get some gasoline to drive into the post office. It will go out in plenty of time for spring planting. I keep whining about not being able to match up people's street addresses with their screen names. Now I'm keeping a notebook though... writing down addresses and sometimes screen names. Ugh! Me and record-keeping. I'm down to 11 packages left to package... These are mostly the complicated ones: Things with moschata that I haven't finished eating, or going overseas and need customs forms, or things that might freeze during transit, or peanuts I am ordering and forwarding on. Then there's about 8 packets in the truck waiting for the drive into town. I only go into town about 2X per month during the winter.

From the letter: "With conventional agriculture becoming more environmentally friendly and organic agriculture becoming more technically sophisticated, my vision is that the two will become merged. But that's getting a bit off-topic." SAY WHAT???

SAY WHAT??? Merged, yes. Ever since the USDA took over organic its sort of been one of those warm and fuzzy mergers. "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE, YOUR DISTINCTIVENESS WILL BE ADDED TO OUR OWN." Plus that nifty new 2,4-D resistance gene they want to add to the mix cause the darn glyphosate resistance ain't working anymore. That's SO much more environmentally friendly. I've read it, I don't necessarily agree with their Monsanto position, but I can respect it. Generally I find Johnny's to be an excellent seed company. Little on the expensive side, but their customers service is pretty phenomenal and their seed quality is extremely consistently excellent. P.S. I apologize for the Star Trek quote, I sometimes cannot help myself.

Bush melons are cute as a button. Joseph if you are interested this is what I propose: your small gourd mix for mixed non-savoyed spinach and mixed moschatas. Also I am still looking for Jenny Lind melons if you happen to have them.
