I have had no luck. Miracle Max can raise the mostly dead. I can only raise live seed. I'm going to have another go, today.

I planted the last of my Curtis Showell Argyrosperma seed today. Thanks Holly. I used Dar's old seed protocol. Thanks Dar. Planted them indoors in an incubation chamber that's about 80F. The soil is the same lot as I used for my tomatoes, watermelon, and moschata, so it should be great for Mixtas. I shared 1/3 of my seed with a collaborator in a slightly warmer climate, direct seeded 1/3 of the seed, and planted the last 1/3 today.
I also used the old seed protocol to plant the last of the Scarlet Runner bean seed that I inherited from my grandfather. It was grown during the 1970's. I have tried previously to sprout it without success.
Tested the tiller today. It works great. And is much quieter.

Thanks Holly, got the watermelon seeds today - will give them a go using recommended protocols in Spring. Dunno where I'm going to put them ... renting some land is looking more and more like the only option. T

One more of the Curtis Showell mixta squash emerged from the old seed protocol while I wasn't paying attention. I kept the flat in a plastic bag so I didn't have to water. It had grown a callous instead of a root. I removed the seed coat by hand. It is now fully rooted: ready to be hardened off and transplanted. That makes 5 plants that are currently growing.
No luck with my grandfather's scarlet runner seed.

Joseph, I can send you runner beans.... But every time I ask you say bush. Would you settle for Dumosa....the half runners?

Joseph, I can send you runner beans.... But every time I ask you say bush. Would you settle for Dumosa....the half runners? I think that you already sent me runners. Grandpa's scarlet runners had sentimental value and were locally adapted... I currently have scarlet runners growing, even put up a trellis for them, but they are only mildly sentimental and not at all locally adapted.

Joseph, I have found that Insuk's Wang Kong is a very good runner bean for challenging conditions. I got it at Sand Hill and can send you some.
I'm sorry about Grandpa's runners.
I didn't get any Guatemala Blue Banana Squash from the seed that Dan Grunt sent me, so I have a similar bummer.

I think I have some GBB, which I'll put in with the Popping Sorghum I'll send you, Holly.
Did you get any action from the Szegedi pepper seed? I didn't.

Joseph, while they wouldn't have any sentimental value i have half a bag of the large scarlet runners from native seeds that i wont ever get around to using (as i prefer the smaller ones). If your also interested i could send you some of the smaller four corners runner bean, which did very well for me here last year. (also from Native Seeds).

Steev, one pepper....well almost a pepper. It got 2 leaves and then it just disappeared. It turned more yellow everyday until the leaves fell off and it died. It was one of those in the bad potting soil. And man is it hot here!
I was looking forward to those. No Jimmy Nardello's came up either. And to top it off, the gopher came and took an entire row of bells out.
I had to break down and go to the nursery, where I bought the last flat of peppers and plug in the empty spots.
Leo is gopher sulphuring everywhere. Hopefully the bastards will all die or move to the burbs.

Here's what the Curtis Showell Mixtas looked like yesterday. The closest was direct seeded. The others came out of the old seed protocol. I planted other mixtas yesterday in a different field. Some from Native Seed SEARCH which didn't produce seed for me in the past, and some from a seed swap which were previously grown in the mid-west.

Sulphur doesn't work so well for gophers as a road flare, but you must use your own judgement about how toxic you think those are. No question, a lit flare down the hole with a stomped-dirt seal kills the little bastards.
