My winter squash patch is crazy huge again this year. I am seeing lots of Cinderella pumpkins again. I want to try scarring them with fall greetings to sell for decorations. I found a website with beautiful photos and plan to steal the ideas. It looks like they used a template. itswrittenonthewalls.blogspot.com/2011/09/halloween-thanksgiving-writing-messages.htmlThankful Harvest Blessings Welcome would all be nice. I don't do Halloween so I won't be doing any scary words but love the harvest kind of thing. I hope I can do a neat job or maybe I should have my mom or husband do it. They are more artistic.

Well, we'll give it a go as well. I put in a whole row of winter luxury.
I love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday.
What I like best about Halloween is that family don't come over to eat. I don't have to clean the house and put away the breakables and hide the liquor. I don't even have to dress up. I can be myself. Cackle Cackle!
I think I might have to do a little BOO on the little Greenseed.

Lovely examples of writing on a squash.
In Dick and Jan Raymond's book Home Gardening Wisdom, they have a brief section on having fun with vine crops. They suggest you can write (or scar) on any melon, or winter squash. They also given a brief description on growing cucumbers in a bottle.

I got overzealous today when I had an earth staple in my hand and saw a pumpkin. I ended up writing on every pumpkin I could find. I didn't have the time today or the long sleeves and pants LOL. It was so fun I couldn't stop. The earth staple worked really well. I mostly scarred Cinderellas but also 2 Luxury Pie and a couple butternuts. I have to wait and see what else forms and do another round.

Hmmm, this might be an interesting advertsing idea for my market stall. Could also be a good way to stop accidental mix-ups between my seed saving and selling melons.

Yeah you could use it for marking stuff like that. I never thought of it.

I am totally addicted! I write on any new pumpkin I can find. I wrote Grandma's house on some last night. I goofed up when it got late and wrote Granda on one. It was reminding me of Charlotte's Web today. Because one Cinderella pumpkin says Beauty on it. And it is a beauty; then that reminded me of the pig and the web would say "What a pig." And people would say 'yes he is some pig.' LOL ;D They are looking great as they grow!

Those are really neat, I'm going to scar a few for our own enjoyment. Can't do it to the market squashes though. That would put them into the "decorative pumpkin" category and we'd have to charge sales tax.

Minnie, I'm so impressed.
You guys are all lucky that I type, because my writing is terrible.
I'm going to go practice on a zucchini. "Das Boat" It's the one I want to save for seed.
I believe that besides beautiful, these could be informational. I can write the variety on the squash that I'm saving for seed, so when the multitudes start arriving, I can pull out the ones with writing to save for seed!
Ox, I'm going to go write "Pie" on a pumpkin. Would that make it informational or decorative?
Minnie, I can't believe your squash are orange already!

Thanks. I can't believe how crazy these squash are either. There is a tan butternut already too. The orange ones are Cinderella and I think they are always orange. The Winter Luxury Pie are still green. I have very sloppy writing so I can't always read what I wrote. But when I was a kid I tried calligraphy and when I really want to I can write sort of neat. My mom would do way better. I should have her out to find any pumpkins not written on yet.
I have also thought about writing the name of all the squash and melons on them but frankly I can't be completely sure what they all are because you see how they have grown! They sure like it there. I grew them last year in almost the same place only a few feet in. But if you could find all your squash and melons and could determine what they are that would be way better than putting on a sticker of the variety.
