Part of your tablelands melon project, Ray? T Yes, mostly greens. They'll all be planted together to cross as they want. I tried last season but it was too cool and I got no melons at all! Fingers crossed.

Well, I planted all the small, short season melons I have, after last year I figured I'll just give it a go. They've all germinated in the planting cells, so now I have quite a surfeit of melons. Should be able to sell a few at the Farmer's Market, and just grow the rest to see what I get. Ray's growing all the greens this year, so mine are all orange, yellow or white. Should be interesting. Thought for a while about grafting onto some tenacious gourd or cucumber, but then realised I'm about as delicate as Atilla the Hun, so just went for the plant together option first.

Here's a pic of a descendant of Joseph's bush melon. The bush habit seems to have been passed on. Other melons the same age (6 weeks) have the usual runners starting whereas all the descendants of Joseph's bush melon have remained very compact. The longest internode length is about 4 cm (< 2"). You can't really see them but flowers are forming.

Having never grown melons before i'ld like to know when flowering will take place,as you can see these two plants are big enough, the flowers have formed but dont seem to be getting any bigger,do the plants get to a certain size and then all the flowers open at the same time?

The flowers will open as they mature, the oldest (those nearest the root) first. Flowers of the watermelon, like the one in your picture, aren't big like those of zucchini or other squash so perhaps some have opened and died and not been noticed.
