My sister-in-law & I once went dumpster diving behind a Super Target. One of the employees told us about how they had dismantled the entire hardware department & that the pickins would be great. It was! She got all the shelving & I got all the hardware. The shelving was in perfect condition, just unwanted. The hardware was either open packages or slow moving items. I can't believe how wasteful some businesses are.

Often when I go to the dump, I wonder how many countries there are that have economies of less dollar amounts than the value of what is discarded in California annually.

Omg , last time I went to the dump there were about 20 5 - 7 foot long high end powder coated metal closet shelving components I would have crawled in for but they would not let me and it is down in a metal bin I really doubt I could get back out of without a rope and pulling team . I too never know what people are thinking about resources they discard, they are going to learn it is not an endless supply . On the other hand kudos to the movement of people giving things away free on craigslist , freecycle and the like.

In one of the countries I worked at in the middle east, there was a dump that we all called Wally-World. It was honestly the best dump in the whole world! You had to sign in to dump stuff, but you could go there with an empty truck & not have to sign in. You could take anything that caught your fancy, in any quantity that you wanted. And they had great stuff! I also love 'Pick & Pull' type junkyards. I pimped out my son's first car (a '77 T-Bird) with parts from an awesome junkyard near Abilene, Texas. Ahhh... The memories!!!
