Blue: as much as I admit your point, I will not be willingly raising gophers, though I'll not interfere with the right of others to grow them. Unless I see a benefit to me in raising a particular variety, it will, at most, be something I will contribute to the banking of, recognizing the value of genes, independently of varieties. Further, as gene sequencing and synthesis advances, I doubt that the banking of natural material will be as vital. I take no satisfaction from that, whatsoever, since I fear it will only promote corporate domination of agriculture and us all, if we permit it. Which is an equally valid point. I suppose any of my views on the subject should be taken with several grains of salt, since they will always be filtered through my own I andmit rather extreme life viewpoint (something like a cross betwen moral masochism and a martyr complex). In my case, I very well might raise the gopers (I know I end up making squirrels fat) since I'd feel guilty about the fact that my garden (and my house) took away land that otherwise would have had native food producing plants to feed them.

gophers in the wild live about 2 years, in irrigated ag, they live 4 years. I may not have been here first, but since I've been feeding and watering them for 20 aught years, I figure I'm entitled to the first born of every dern litter. And I will smite them. Or send my stewards after them. What you do with the heathen varmints at your place is your own business. And I respect your right to bake them into pies, or bake pies for them. I say though, being able to send seeds to Synergy makes me want to plant more Attachments:

I didn't say I don't or won't raise gophers, only that I don't willingly do so. I enjoyed watching the rodent patrol today, hovering and cruising my fields: an osprey, a Golden Eagle, and two small hawks. Eventually, I intend to put up nesting boxes and perches to encourage raptors.

In my own dorky way I admire the people on this forum . I think other people discuss or complain about the monsantos of the world, but the people here UNDERMINE the monstantos of the world . How could I not be inspired to join in and learn to grow and save seed.

Subvert the Dominant Paradigm; plant what serves you, not the market.
