That looks just lovely, Mayz. But, see, I would not have known that it was ripe.

That looks just lovely, Mayz. But, see, I would not have known that it was ripe. So easy with the cantaloupes types. First the peduncle goes away by cracks around it. The day after, it smells soooo good. Take your knife and eat it.

Ah yes those ARE the ones I have been having so much trouble with. They are all mushy inside and terrible 'commercially'.

They are all mushy inside and terrible 'commercially'. Are they getting too much water? I typically stop watering my muskmelons when the first fruits start ripening. Also, I pick three times per week, about at the first blush of color.

Although it's hot, I have also stopped watering melons, otherwise they just split or taste bad. Joseph, I find the same thing with tomatoes.

Summer is our rainy season so splitting and watery, mushy fruit is the rule rather than the exception. The drought years were good, from this point of view! ...Also, I pick three times per week, about at the first blush of color. Do melons continue to ripen once picked Joseph? I'm wondering whether picking at the first blush of colour might work me.

I have doubts about post-picking ripening; post-picking rotting, no question.
I think I really need to separate my melons from anything I might want to continue irrigating. I need to map and plan more thoroughly, that's all there is to it. Having way better toolage than last year, I expect to improve my act, this year.
I don't think I can continue trying to grow separate varieties of melons, for the most part; so I guess it's time to jump off the landrace cliff; sure wish I had a pig.
