Baked Whangaparoa Crown for dinner tonight; that's a nice squash, tasty, non-fibrous, handy size, prolific, not as orange as I would prefer.
One day this week, when my landlady isn't around, so the kitchen is free, I'll cut into the last squash from 2012, an enormous Minnie's Apache Hubbard (fourteen months off the vine), and given it's being still good, I'll give part to my neighbor, the chef (he's tickled by the name), and make jar-bread from the rest. Tomorrow I'll spend some time shelling aaamonds to toast for that.

I did like the Whanga as well. Alas, this year the squash bugs ate it. I still have a few squashes left from this year. Notably the French Musque de Provence came through the bug crisis. I have one lowly butternut and a handful of delicatas left. Well, off to cook for Christmas Eve. All of you have a great holiday.

Got around to cracking that Minnie's today; I think it had lost up to half its weight drying the past 14 months; the seed-webbing was pure white and totally dry. After scraping out the fibrous part, the flesh was ~1/2" thick. I peeled and cut it up, put it in a pot with a little water, cooked it fork-tender, drained and mashed it. I think it had somewhat reconstituted by absorbing water. There's a batch of aaamond/raisin jar-bread due out of the oven in 20 minutes.
Having enough cooked squash for two more batches, I'm thinking walnut/raisin and something with orange zest.
On down the road, I'd like to work up jar-breads with some combinations of savories: bacon; herbs; cheese; chili flakes, like that. I'd also like to work in corn meal/flour.

I gave out the last of my squash today in CSA shares. It wasn't the best squash year so I was glad to have so many sweet potatoes. I cut up one of Joseph's moschata mix because it had a bad spot and it was so orange inside! I cubed and froze it. Gave away the striped version also from his mix. Those get very large. Then also the last delicata/dumpling and a Marina di Chioggia which was turning orange. I have kept 2 spaghetti squash for us. I hope for better storing squash next year with less blemishes.

Does anyone have a few extra seeds of RED KURI squash? Want to swap for something? Really, I only need about 6 seeds. PM me if you have and are willing. Otherwise, I'll have to go shopping and you know what that means....

My last dog was not averse to sleeping with my less-pissy cats (3 of the 4 I had then), a chihuahua mix, he loved anything warm, even if covered in cat fur; clearly didn't bring on the Apocalypse. If I have some Red Kuri (probably}, it's yours, but I'm not gonna go digging 'til I know whether I'm also looking for Jade Numbat, in its various incarnations.

No rush, I can't plant squash till April! Unless this spring weather continues. It's 70 degrees out. I'm starting to think I should dig out shorts and flops.

Yes, this California weather is a mess; warm enough for early planting, too dry for seeds to sprout.

Providing I can get some mature seeds out of the remaining fruit, I am only planning to grow Josephs butternuts this year. These were just borderline last year, but I got them in late so this year with a following wind I should be able to give them a fairer shot.

long pie.tiff (63.73 KB)Yesterday I started Cha Cha Sugar X and Longpie x Delicata Now, I'd love to hear from Oxbow as to what these were and what he expects them to be? This is a picture of Long Pie. So will I get a 7 pound delicata or a striped long pie? What are we looking for?
