There seems to be a growing tendency for people listing the day and month, but not the year. What's that about, being willing to disclose one's astrological sign, but not one's age?

I never give my real birth date on the internet, just common sense, so you can't look me up for a date Steve, you might get a centenarion or a teen. Of course, maybe you just like a surprise Edited to add: Damn, I just realised I have my pic in my profile

I can't name all the institutions that ask me to give my date of birth when I call up, including some of my banks. Given that, giving the correct birth date to forums is not something I consider wise.

8 different forums sent junk mail to congratulate me on my 114th birthday on January 1st.

Rowan: I'd not want to look you up for a date; you're not my preferred gender for that; admittedly a cute young fella, though.
Billw: did any of them send coupons for good stuff? If not, they weren't sincere.
Frankly, I think once one enters the internet, there is little hidden and one may as well take the attitude "Here I am, you bastards, bite my shorts or leave me alone!"

It's that blokey hat, Rowan , had me confused for a while too. Glad I figured it out before I dropped in for that visit. And how has the summer been, by the way? I'm pretty sensitive about posting too much on the net, too. I suppose its about hoping that someone else will be an easier target, tho no doubt much of my life is discernable with a bit of informed searching. And I don't shred my paper waste. Oops... T

I'm a very old soul driving around in a body that looks, feels, acts, thinks much younger than I am. So actual numbers don't mean that much to me. I do wish everyone's profile gave a general idea of their location, though. That's much more informative when talking about growing plants.
Rowan, personally I like your pic, it shows a great attitude. To stem any confusion I've changed my avatar from the hummingbird.

haha wow you guys are pretty funny...
This is a good question though. I usually give a fake Bday on the net, here I was honest as it's a nice little community. No year listed, because if someone is interested enough to want to know my age - they should be able to ask. I feel some anonymity helps people get along in these situations. I can talk freely with someone 3 times my age. Not to be rude, but some of the old timers (elsewhere, not here) get a bit judgmental/let my age affect how they communicate with me. I'd much rather people just be themselves. If y'all must know I'm 23, nice to meet you lol. If you want to see my face I guarantee you could find it with google searching news clippings. (dang newspapers, why do they need websites anyway?) . I guess I also just figure people don't want to stare at me every time I post... And I don't have any photos from the past 5 years, so a younger me wouldn't exactly be appropriate....

Ah richardw we all know garden gnomes cannot lift and artfully place that much rock! All the ones I've seen pretty much sit on their butts. I'm slowly figuring out where people are from by reading the banter. Ethan, I find great optimism in many of the things your generation is doing. The fact you are 23 and working on a biomass project is a good example of this.

I've added my location to the "Profile" - "Personal" - "Latest Status" field, and to "Profile" - "Personal" - "Signature"

Of course not; your measurements will be sufficient.
Really, though, I just didn't understand why anyone would balk at the year, especially when posting a photo, as many do.
Personally, I feel listing my exact age may serve as an encouragement to younger folk (on whom I will clearly increasingly depend, as even my prodigious powers decline) that, if a dumb-ass like me can survive and thrive so long, they ought not fail to plan for the long haul. That "live fast, die young, and leave an attractive corpse" thing didn't work out for me, since I didn't die young; oh, well, two out of three ain't bad.
