This is a very fun project to me. I'm on the hunt for pink carrot flowers so if you find something please shout. Beautiful colours. I have different flower colors among my carrots.

This year I have 19 new varieties, one landrace and 4 crosses/projects. Most don't do very well but interesting individuals will show up. Diversity in the population will increase. Guess it's selection preassure.

I just received seeds of this. I'm hoping for something multi purpose so worry that this has been bred to bolt but am going to try it.

ilex , do you interplant your carrots with onions/leeks as companion plants, or to keep the carrot fly away?

ilex , do you interplant your carrots with onions/leeks as companion plants, or to keep the carrot fly away? I'm not sure I have carrot fly, I do have leek moth. I know they grow well together, so I am trying how it works. I also need to work on spacing, timing, and varieties used (on the onion part, as some are too vigorous). As I grow carrots mostly October-April, I think I skip the fly season. They might attack the seed crop, but those are big and don't complain. I want to start sowing earlier (August), so we'll see next year.

Getting interesting. Looks like I went backwards regarding short carrots. They are VERY vigorous now: The one in the bottom is a local lavender, the rest are crossed.

I just got some seeds of that Darren. My concern is that it has been selected for annual flowering. I still want to retain the biennially. Should be fun to see though.

Prettier and prettier carrots Ilex. I love the little lines of lavender running through them.

So far, purples don't stain, even when cooked.
I also wonder were the white shown above came from. I didn't plant any whites and it doesn't look like a QAL cross. White is supposed to be dominant over other colors.

Correct me but was there not white cores on the purple ones? I wonder if there is some kind of colour-zoning-gene interplay that produced the white?

Yes, I had white, yellow and different shades of orange cores. Lavender carrots only have Shallow color. Cores are white.

I am lifting the selection patch. Now I need to decide how to proceed. It will probably divide it somewhat. I have many new varieties that I wanted to add to the group, they are just little babies compared to my big boys. None grew as well as mine by far.
Will probably create a main patch of those that meet my selection criteria, and a secondary one were I add some from the main patch, plus new and interesting genetics. Each year, I would add the best to the main patch.
Thinking about creating a Spanish only blacks/purples.
Getting quite a few 1 lb roots, very edible. Taste so far is quite good. No woody cores yet.
As I sow thick and thin the weak, there's strong selection pressure for big leaves, strong tops and purple roots. My carrots sprout and grow much better, in my conditions, than anything I've tried.
Yellows almost dissapeared, although some purple x yellow crossed ones are really good tasting. I expect some segregation for yellow next year.
Virtually no whites. I'm getting better at culling QAL hybrids when small.
I have a feeling this will end up evolving into something very similar to old Spanish landraces, just with shorter roots.
Carrot porn to follow...
