Has anyone tried planting a bean or two in a watermelon mound? I just broke new ground this year and I am going to put watermelon cantaloupe and cucumbers there. Today I am hoping to get some horse poo for the area or at least the mounds. I like to do 3 plants per mound and was thinking maybe a green bean or pea in the middle of each mound. I probably should have put beans there this year but already have the whole garden planned out. Only reason I made it bigger is bc I didn't have room for the melons lol.

I have melons in big pots in the greenhouse, and a bean in each pot, climbing up a tall plastic trellis.
Some of the melons thought they should also climb, but I detached them and put them on the floor instead.
The beans are producing, but the melons are not yet producing female flowers.

I grew my fava beans out last year in the mounds I planted my pumpkins and melons in this spring, so there was some overlap. When the beans were done instead of pulling them out I just cut the plants off at ground level so the roots of the seedlings wouldn't be harmed. I wouldn't plant a pole type bean or you'd have a tangled mess, but some bush beans would work. Here it helps shade the roots of the pumpkins and melons from the hot sun as they grow away from the mounds.

Flower, I'm so surprised that you do mounds. My other "Texas" friends say they use ditches or holes to plant in.

Holly it depends on the crop and location. The soil is pretty rocky so the hills give the cucurbits enough foot room. They would have to be drip irrigated regardless, not really enough rain for a basin to catch. But there is a rim around the hills to keep the water within. I do the same for the tomatoes.

I decided not to try it. I got in a rush around the time I planted them and forgot to put and bush bean in. Now there are way to many vines going every which way for me to plant them now. With the close spacing I did they probably would have been choked out anyway.
