if season length is likely to be an issue, it may be worthwhile to plant early and protect or even pot up and protect to get a jump on the season. i've done the latter, only planting in-ground when the coast was clear, a few times.

I start my yacon in quart pots and transplant. They don't seem to be bothered by it at all. I'll probably pot them up next week and plant them out around the end of March. I don't think that this increases yield here, but it does increase flowering.
