I'd line the bed completely, drying being the biggest problem for me; if I were to raise trees for transplant, I'd have holes only above the outside soil, to discourage roots; otherwise, bottom drainage.

I've got some styrofoam fish boxes of various sizes, thinking to cut out the bottoms and use those (plus bottoms and lids) to make raised beds out of. Very few of them are deep enough to use for a whole season otherwise. Maybe covering them with a sort of hypertufa to make them look less like what they are and to join them together..but the styrofoam ought to counter the issues of drying out or abrupt changes of weather. They will just go into landfill otherwise, they seem never to break down but nobody here accepts styrofoam for recycling.

Don't know how big yours are, but that's a consideration in whether it's worth going to the trouble; I'd not use it on my farm as the sun is utter hell on plastic of any sort. Perils of clean air, you know?
