Have the days been cool? They have been up here and everything is growing real slow now. It seems that the 75+ days they have a good Spert but slow back down if it gets cooler.

Have the days been cool? They have been up here and everything is growing real slow now. It seems that the 75+ days they have a good Spert but slow back down if it gets cooler. 50s and 60s today, but 3 or four days ago it was hot and humid. We're having an unusual summer here.

Nice series of photos. Should be OK to save seed from this squash.
The seeds become viable about the time that it becomes difficult to push a fingernail through the skin. The fruit will keep getting larger until that time. I usually let squash sit for an additional month after harvest before collecting seeds. When saving seeds I like to cut the squash open, and rub my finger in the juice and then touch my finger to my tongue to make sure I'm not inadvertently saving seeds from a bitter squash.

When I went out to check it on the 13th, the last two plants looked dead. Maybe I should have left it another day or two to draw the last of the energy to itself. Didn't think of it. The fruit's in the fridge. I'll check it later. If it's close to that firmness, I'll try to save from it. Otherwise I'll start again next year.
