It's not much different even way down here. I've gotten around it by investing in a lot of frost cover, and usually expect to have to cover/uncover things a couple times. It's the only way I can beat the heat which seems to arrive earlier and earlier. I've also had to invest in shade cloth for the heat of summer to extend other things.

Just a little below zero this morning. Stars are as bright as they get here in the Ohio valley. Ordered some honeyberry honeysuckle plants and they arrived last week. Got them buried in dry leaves up against the south side of the house. They were good and dormant and just came from Ohio, supposed to be hardy to -40. They don't look like they have been greenhouse pampered so I think they are fine. I'll get them in the ground as soon as it thaws out enough.

Hope you don't need to go anywhere before that melts off! They are forecasting a wintery mix with snow for us way down here tonight, but certainly it's already fallen on all you northern folk!

Very cold here (temp was at 0*F today) with a thin layer of snow (no where near as much as you got Glenn!). There are thick layers of ice hidden beneath the snow, which makes it a pain to carry things back to the barn. Moved twelve bales of straw back there today.

Yep it snowed, best we have had in a while. Cold too, high of about 9 above for the day. Unusual to snow much here when it is that cold. That farthest ridge line is in Kentucky, about another 1/4 mile or so out this point you can look down Lost Fork valley all the way to the river, that's where we were going but the dog wasn't able to walk and had to jump every step. She was developing a sever case of ice ball toes and I felt sorry for her. Here she is thinking, well are you coming? unusual for her to be in the lead going home.

reed I agree with the dog, that looks awfully cold! Here's our winter day doing a bit of hiking nearby on Saturday, 70 degrees.

80F in Oakland on Sunday; February is generally T-shirt weather, but that's a tad much.

4 inches of fresh snow near Philly. Temps have moderated from the lower singles up into the 20s. Our February is layered, deeply!

Reed, We once found these dog sock things made out of neoprene. We'd put them on the dog before going hiking in the snow, or at the beach. Her paws used to get pretty torn up. Sage, that's a beautiful picture. I don't envy anyone sitting in 0 or minus 20 today, but I will envy you your water come August

Overcast and cold in Oakland this morning, was supposed to burn off, didn't; mid-sixtiesF; quite a change from Sunday's 80F.

It has been ridiculously warm here, especially the past couple weeks. The evenings have been just a little chilly. Everything is thinking it is spring and starting to sprout. Now I am wondering what to do with my potatoes that are sprouting already. D: (sticking them in pots for the time being I guess, any advice?)

My strategy for sprouting potatoes is to get them into an area that is well lighted. And let them sit there until it is time to replant them. But not in directs sunlight.

My strategy for sprouting potatoes is to get them into an area that is well lighted. And let them sit there until it is time to replant them. But not in directs sunlight. I actually had them in almost complete darkness, checked on them and found that a lot of them were around four inches already. Ahhh! I (quickly) put them in pots just now before the sunlight was completely gone. I don't mind using a headlamp to garden... but it doesn't fit right!
