So far I've spotted: One brassica from my own crossing that had survived. The ones that grew in that spot last year were very collard like. I'll be looking to save seeds, maybe on their own. A hardy collard could be useful. A few brassicas from the imperial no plow cover crop mix. Haven't tasted any yet. If they're good, I'll try to include into the proto-landrace. One carrot from Joseph Lofthouse 's landrace. Inside the tractor tire, maybe the microclimate saved it, but obviously pretty hardy. Hope it's self compatible. With no other carrots that'll be in bloom, that's the only way it can start to become MY local landrace.

I've recently started teaching myself MIT's App Inventor 2. I primarily wanted to learn how to make my own app. As a secondary goal, I'd love to turn it into a residual income stream. There are several ways to do that, and I haven't chosen yet. But my first app isn't gonna do it. It's tiny and lame, most of the fun wears off in a minute or so. No way am I charging for that. So I need a new project. One that will generate enough feedback to help me polish it into something marketable. I think I'd like to try some kind of garden journal. It falls well within my interests, and I think this forum could be a great resource for feedback and potential beta testers. Somewhere on here is a thread where a few of you have talked about how you journal. You were talking about on paper, but I'll probably look that up and see what applies here. Probably edit this post with a link to it, too. EDIT: Here it is. Here's my preliminary list of feature ideas (provided that my skills are sufficient): - Journaling of first/ last frost dates, planting dates, harvest dates, user defined dates (weeding? first flowering?) I'd like these events to have a space for comments, maybe the option to attach pictures or documents. Google calendar integration would be a plus.
- Seed inventory
- trade list
- Journaling for seed purchases or trades. (I've recently started keeping track of who I've traded with, how to contact them, what I sent them and what they sent me.)
- Encrypted backup of all data
- Export any/all data as .txt , .pdf , .html
So, what do you guys think? Would such an app provide anything new, or just duplicate what's already out there? What else would be good to bring to this project? What version of monitization do you find least annoying? Free app with ads? Free version with ads, paid version without? Paid app, no ads? Donationware? In case anyone's curious, here's a link to my first app on the Amazon app store. It's lame. Don't say I didn't warn you. The Easiest Game in the World

oldmobie and richardw : Welcome to the elite ranks of plant breeders who have managed to produce true garlic seeds! Next goal, should you choose to attempt it, is germination. Thank you! [Insert boring, pompous speech here.] ..."shoulders of giants". Mine is from Chesnok Red, from bulbils kazedwards sent me, for the record.

Does it look legit to you guys, or just chaff? That is, if the resolution is sufficient to tell.

I think I got one? Very uneven and sharp edged. I guess that can happen to a plant selected in a way indifferent or hostile towards sexual reproduction for a couple thousand years. Does it look legit to you guys, or just chaff? I think the little piece may be part of a broken one, or just some chaff.

Speaking as diplomatically as I can, I spent several hours looking into Glass Gem online and the result is that I am not going anywhere near it. I feel my concerns have been proven out, in my opinion GG is not a good corn to ever use for breeding stock for popcorn. Are you sure there isn't any Glass Gem heritage in your seed? Joseph Lofthouse was at one time trying to improve Glass Gem for inclusion into his landrace popcorn. I re-read most of what was written about it, but I'm not clear if he included it or not. At any rate, if he did, most of the negative non-optimal traits will have been selected out.

Do you think those tips are actually still alive or were they maybe just protected from being bleached by being folded inside the stipules? I really don't know. It's either dead, or so near dead that I probably won't be able to tell unless the warm weather holds out.

Not sure if this pic will work.. I have grown out some seed I got from Ivan buddenhagen Finally they have produced produced bulbs which some I'm very pleased with, also I have seed set on a few .. You got your links right, but you didn't wrap them in image tags. Above is what happens if you do. When composing your post, there's an add image tool. Just put your link into it, and it will add the tags you need.

One of my proto-heat-tolerant peas is still just clinging to life. I know it's the nature of peas to handle some cold, but seems like shelling peas don't usually overwinter. They also don't usually get planted in the summer and produce in the summer. I think I planted in August, but a check of my "records" only confirms they were planted after June 21st, but early enough to have pods by September 22nd. I think it'll go ahead and finish dieing without producing anything, but I'm really liking what I see in it's genetics. Survives and produces during (at least a mild) summer, tries very hard to survive winter, and grows on one of the tallest pea plants I've ever grown. (Only 4' - 4½' tall, but I never had success with peas until I got some diversity. These started out as Joseph Lofthouse 's landrace. The longer they adapt to my garden and preferences, the more I like 'em.) I have a few seeds put back from the proto-heat-tolerant planting, and a very few known to be from this plant. It looks like adaptation to heat may go faster than I thought it would.

Do you mean adding organic matter to your sand? That's what I've been considering, but I'm a little reluctant. Other people don't seem to want residual OM in their aquaponics. Sure, the fish waste is OM, but mobile and largely dissolved. If a plant dies or too many roots are left behind, they put in worms to eat that stuff or just dig it out and remove it. I guess it needs more research and/or experimentation. I might try mixing sand and different amounts of OM in pots and see how things grow in those, before contaminating the whole bed.

Off topic but not worth its own thread. Olney, Illinois has signs saying to watch out for squirrels. Most of the squirrels in that town are white... I know what you mean. I used to live in Marionville, MO. That place wouldn't even be on the map without the pigment defecient tree rats. Pity they understand they're protected. They aren't scared of cars; sometimes they're hard to miss. Heavy fines there, too.

Does anybody grow their squash on trellises? I have before. Butternut and acorn I think. This year squash bugs and vine borers took 'em. But gourds did great on it. It is heavy duty. Cattle panels doubled over, standing on the short sides, clipped to T-posts.

Good experimentation! I'd be a little cautious with the metal lid, especially if you drilled a hole in it, if you don't leave much head space. It is better if the brine doesn't come into contact with metal. That looks like a food-grade cap on the jar. If so, it would be lined, not bare metal. Martin It's the lid that came with one of the kosher dill jars. The finished surface should tolerate acidity and salt. I'm watching for rust / degradation. Also watching for a plastic lid that fits. I guess more head space would be a good idea.
