Finally stopped raining yesterday and now the sun is shining brightly. Absolutely beautiful day! Historic flooding west of Austin, TX two weeks ago causing much damage and some loss of life. Austin Water is still under a mandatory boil order due to the filtration systems being overloaded by all the mud and debris in the lakes. Doesn't affect me as I live a good ways out of the city and am on a rural water supply system fed by deep wells. Probably be planting my garlic this weekend as now is the prime time for it. Nice to see the sun again.

We had 1.5 inches of rain early Tuesday morning. Strong winds all day with gusts up to 50 mph. It is finally settling down somewhat. Glad to get the rain since we were getting quite dry around here.

What's a squonk? Why would one hunt it? Aren't they from Pennsylvania? A Squonk is indeed a mythical creature supposed to inhabit the forests of Pennsylvania in days of old. I took my username from the Genesis song Squonk from the album A Trick of the Tail (1976). In the song, the Hunter uses trickery to catch a Squonk, a feat that no person had ever done. In the end, though, the Squonk dissolves itself into a pool of tears, leaving the Hunter with nothing but a story that no one would believe. Kind of a parable about the elusive nature of success in this life. Besides, I just liked the song.

Rainfall here has been extremely variable this year. Wet January and March to June. Almost nothing at all in February and back to drought for July to September. Fourteen inches in May and Eight and a half inches this past Friday thru Sunday and more on the way. Multi-year drought with record wildfires followed by record flooding followed by another drought and more wildfires followed by more flooding. In other words, typical Texas weather. Yep, you gotta be tough to live here. On the plus side (yes, there is one), my formerly bone dry sand is now nice and saturated and ready for Fall plowing and planting. If the El Niño holds up, it should be a nice wet Winter and Spring here and great for gardening.

Longtime gardener here getting back into the game after sitting out for a few years due to health problems. I am located east of Austin, Texas on the sandy land near the great Bastrop fire of 2011 and the lesser fire of 2015. I was drawn to this particular Forum due to my interest in the more "out of the ordinary" food plants that are hardly ever known or seen in most gardens. No shortage of that here, for sure.
