On another note, when I was looking at Real Seed Catalog years back they said the Champion of England grew to 10 feet tall. On the chart above and at a couple of websites (also selling the seed) they describe it as 5-7 feet tall, other websites agree to the 10 feet tall description. So what gives, anyone explain? My impression of peas is that they are slightly day-length sensitive, and the further north you grow them, the longer the vines are likely to be. So people may be describing their experiences, but they vary depending on where they are.

I aim to put indoor-started cucurbits out around May 24th through June 1st. I start them April 24th. So, 4 to 5 weeks.

We got cattle fencing, which is 5? 6? (forget) feet high, and we put 2 rows of it up (so total height is 10' or 12') It was expensive, but it does the trick. The area fenced out is scrubby, though, so they can't get a good run at it.

I review different varieties on my blog, and I compared Carruther's Purple Podded and Clarke's Beltony Blue one year. Carruther's was the better of the two. seasonalontariofood.blogspot.com/2015/07/peas-purple-podded-irish-twins.htmlIf you riffle through "A Varietal Report" in the right hand column of the blog, there are a number of other peas reviewed, but those are the only two purple podded ones I've grown.

Hey, zgardener - The Gills Golden Pippin was the one thing on the list I ended up buying, but thanks for the offer.
And after 6 months of growing the damn things, I assure you, I wasn't laughing about those damn "Anchos".

Lucky you!

Yeah, agree this is likely a potting mix issue.
The weirdest things can throw seedlings off - last spring we used some potting mix we had stored in the garage, and it turned out mice had been in it. We planted onions, and up came peas and sunflowers. The onions did terribly. I think it might have been the mouse piss that was the problem.
We've had enough trouble with cheap potting mix that we now make a point to buy a sterile mix designed for seedlings, pay the extra money, and be sure to store any leftovers on a high shelf in the basement.

Finally got all our seed orders organized and done, and am left wanting a few things. Does anyone have:
- Ed's Red shallot - Gill's Golden Pippin acorn squash - Chervena Chushka red pepper - a good Ancho chile (I bought some seed but it turned out to have been bred to have all the heat removed, phfeeugh, &$#@! - Philadelphia White Box radish - Petrowska turnip
I have all kinds of things, esp watermelon, leeks, random moschata squash; what are you looking for? I will check. (Beans are a problem - I have lots, but there is anthracnose in my garden).

bluehawk133, did you ever get these? I did not offer mine as my beans have anthracnose, but I do have them.

A little further north than what you are looking for, but I know Soldier beans were associated with the Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, Abenaki and Penobscot groups (the Wabaniki confederacy). If you are interested in heirlooms from that group, Hope seeds in Nova Scotia has a few things. www.hopeseed.com/homeI got a bean from oxbowfarm a few years back, Octarora Cornfield. It's a small, dry pole (corn) bean with beige and brown mottling. In spite of the small size of the beans individually I found it as productive as anything else, in terms of volume produced. If he's around maybe he could tell you more about it.
