andrew, look at spice racks in ethnic stores for a bit of diversity. I've got a grex, but most of mine are from US seed suppliers, so i suspect i have nothing that you couldn't get more easily.

Honestly, the number of Aussie companies that will ship to the US is pretty limited too . . . I do... T

like everyone else said. I like the soapbox function here, it doesn't seem to get abused - but then I'm not moderating it. And while I agree with Oxbow about the heritage tomatoes, it is a 'gateway drug' for many, me included. T

Rowan, had a very quick peek. Good that you didn't procrastinate too much...but i think keen had some nice suggestions. The OSSI idea is nice, as long as the freedom to post material that might be a bit edgy is still available. Keen, I'm interested in looking into new forum software, i wonder if i can migrate my aussie forum to somethin newer? probably dont have the available mental energy at the moment, tho.
too tired to contribute at the moment, spent all day organising for a huge rain event that is forecast. All day up a ladder, im knackered. T

"a hangover from the British class system"? You mean when it was fine to shoot the lower classes, instead of transporting them? Seriously, I sort of regret the re-appearance of deer on the farm, since the mountain lions have been "managed off"; I never felt threatened by the pumas, even when I fell asleep outside sky-watching. Nah, we post-date the shoot 'em period, we were all transported. Unless you are indigenous, but that is way too serious an issue for a Steev thread Deer are upper class sport, so got protected - rabbits and hares are lower class game, so no regulation - ditto trout - regulated, bag limits fly only water, closed seasons etc, but redfin (perch), carp, and the other introduced eating fish - the so called coarse fish, are open season year round.

If we all turned to vegetarianism here in New Zealand that would be ecologically disastrous, with introduced deer, pigs, possums, stoats, goats, tahar, wallabies, horses etc etc etc having no predators other than humans, they need to be hunted and eaten. Makes you think what would happen if humans were to suddenly jump ship? you would hope that the gates to the zoo's were left open for the tigers and lions, 'help ya self lads'. Accordingly to our media though trout and salmon were not introduced but immigrated here, packed there wee bags and decided on a better life down under. Cant use that word 'introduced' for trout, even though they pray heavily on our native fish species, they have NO protection and yet you could be sent to jail if rules around the taking of trout are not followed, hows that for fucked up? Deer are protected under the Wildlife Act here, along with the endangered little marsupials. you need a permit to shoot the bastards, a hangover from the british class system. bunnies and foxes are fair game tho. We have similar rules re trout here too richard. T

My personal take on microgreens, sprouts, and baby greens/mesclun is that the market window for small operators to be profitable is rapidly closing and has already closed for mesclun. Growing out a microgreen is basically glorified sprouting, which means its mainly a function of light, temperature, moisture and time. This makes it possible for large operations to figure out ways to mechanize production and bring massive quantities to market very cheaply. I try to avoid getting into crops where I'm likely to be competing against a robot in the near future. JMO. Good call, oxbow. The guy I'm colluding with with the big commercial operation reckons he is coming under increasing pressure from warehouse indoor farms in the city with the LEDs, conveyor belt trays, hydroponics, etc. By manipulating liht frequencies they can get greener greens, purpler purples, redder reds, that he just cant compete with. no transport costs either. and those robots have Siri-like charm...

The photo issue here is a real pain. Can we just pay to up the image capacity? I don't use a cloud storage facility. I used to take pics on a camera, eject the SD card, upload to picasa, and right click for a link. Now my new phone is my camera, no SD card, and my brain is already to full of 60 years of garbage to have room to learn bluetoothing, etc etc. Every cloud facility wants to be my best friend and to know my whole fucking genome, which i refuse to give, and picasa has stopped sharing last time i looked. Pity, since rowan 's fruiting cactus is just flowering, and it is spectacular!

The guy who is growing out my purple snowpeas for me runs a micro greens business. A retired poultry farmer, his daughter made him go out and do something to keep himself occupied. Now employs 35 people, exports to china, singapore, & hong kong specialising in micro greens and flower garnish crops. He was really pleased when i gave him half a kilo of red flowered broadbean seed. One issue his customers require is continuity of supply. T

Not cheap that stuff, that 9x4m piece in the photo above was $115. How fine are the holes in yours templetonHi richard, I got an end of roll discount, 8 m X 5 for the price of 5m; still $120. Very fine holes, very robust material. I think I'll just lay out the 5 metres, and cut a strip, sow the strip into a 5 m circumference hoop, stand it on end and cut and sow a lid. Allows me to cut variable height covers. I probably need 4 or 5, for carrots and parsnip, and maybe melons.

I don't think I can register something that someone else had bred/selected. It would be nice if it was registered. you can register nearly everything as long as you are the first. Even letters. Sad but true. Sorry i should have been clearer. OSSI registration. They have standards T

just got 8 metres of 5 metre wide uv stabilised insect mesh. Bit expensive, from a kiwi mob called redpath greenhouses. Very solid looking materil. Now all i need is some lightweight designs to make movable cages to prevent cross pollination.
