I dont know how big his Birches are but i plan to call past to have a look how he's doing and have a taste. He's likely that his land is heavy clay and damp for trees of all sorts.

It now appears that the lady who received TGS grown cloves from me made a mistake and picked a seed head from some kind of onion instead going by the round leaf and not flat.
Feeling rather disappointed ....oh well

Its the other end of the growing season that has lengthened, we can still get a killing frost up into November. This is the time of year garden centers make good money, selling replacement tomatoes, peppers etc to people who plant out too early.

Talking with a bloke in the supermarket a few days where he was saying he's been tapping some of this Silver Birch trees, he reckons the syrup is not as sweet as Maple and much prepares it . I dont have any growing here but they grow so fast that getting a few Birches growing could be worth doing.

Frosts starting to lighten off now on clear nights, another three weeks and it will take a Antarctic blast to produce frost after that

Quite a dark purple leaf on the second plant. Two of my seedlings are more purple than the others. Another seedling popped today, so that's 8 now.

Yes Ive noticed that they seem to sit there for ages, the first seedling is now finally growing a second set of leaves.
As its getting warmer ive noticed the speed difference in germination between the first and #7 seedling, first one took days to unravel where #7 took no time at all.

Found another dead germinated seedling, so total of seven in first leaf, one looking very purple. Given the genetic diversity even if i dont get a strong seed producer from these first clones maybe I'll found better seed producers in the second generation.? reed So do most clones produce at least some seed and how many dont at all? Why do you think your having problem with some dying? Only thing I can think is it's not warm enough. No well past being cold now, the stone work inside is warming a lot now so even the nights are 16Cdeg, daytime high 20Cdeg, another week and the door will need to be open during the dayDoes first leaf mean first true leaves, not seed leaves? Yep, first true leaves sorry. I

Its commonly recommended that that's how they should be grown. Right, well there's only one way to know for sure.
