The oldest seed saving organization in the U.S., and the largest in the world, SSE and its founders, Kent and Diane Whealy can be credited with getting the whole heirlooms thing started. Through it's network of more than 8,000 "listed" members, seeds are disemminated broadly. Plus SSE now has a public catalog from which anyone can order. Seed Savers Exchange 3076 North Winn Rd. Those of you with SSE members' catalogs, would you mind ordering for others, or is that verboten?

Johno, I'm not a member. There is a public catalogue, which is what you see online. I ordered last year from it. They were quick to process. The parcel was well packaged and documented. And it arrived here within 6 days which is some kind of a record for stuff to get here from the U.S. Other than once when Flowerpower sent me a parcel and it arrived in 3 days..but that isn't likely to ever happen again.

I didn't order from them last yr, so I don't think I will get a catalog this yr. I'm sure I'll receive enough catalogs to keep me occupied.

I get the public catalog. What's up with their weird print colors?! - LOL. It's a good catalog, though.
What I was wondering is what's out there in the yearbook that I'm unfamiliar with. I gotta' know it all, ya' know! More to memorize! Just kidding... What I would really like to know about is any C.moschatas, or white sweet corns, or half runner beans in the yearbook that I haven't heard of.

Johno, I'm planning on joining SSE shortly and when I get the yearbook I'll let you know what I can. I am specifically joining for three reasons; colored sweet corns, squash, and tobacco, crops which I still need and want more variations of.....oh yeah....and watermelons (can't ever have to many of those beautiful, luscious, golden, orange, red, white and bi-colored round pieces of Manna) -Alan

Alan, in one of those old Mother Earth News is a letter from Kent Whealy, letting folks know what he wanted to do, and asking for seeds they had saved. Funny how a small beginning can turn into something pretty monumental. Somehow, I see you doing some pretty monumental things...We will all be able to say, I knew him when.

Thanks Karen. At heart i'm just a dreamer who gets great enjoyment out of mixing up the genetics of things in a "what if" sort of way I suppose. I've got a ton of big ideas, now if I could just run into the "ton" of money it will take to implement them I would be ok.
Speaking of money and ideas, have I told you the next step? 20 X 50 wormhouse at sometime in the near future, so all my fertilizer is on farm. One of these years.
