The ******* gopher has eaten everything. Every time I go out to check the garden, I find bits and pieces of melon rinds, tomatoes missing, etc. I left some bait out for it yesterday, but he missed his afternoon rounds. It's like he has ESP or something. I see it occasionally, but it is always positioned such that there is a backdrop I wouldn't want to shoot at (car, horse, neighbor's house, always something.) And if I so much as take a step towards the door, the darned thing disappears. Very frustrating...
I was drying the AD corn on a wire table on the back deck. I went out for morning coffee the other day to find that it had rained all night. Immediately I brought the table, corn, and all into the house and put a fan on it in hopes that it wouldn't sprout. So far it all looks fine - whew!
The cukes other than White Wonder never did much - nothing harvestable. But the WW's are still producing. I've found a nice multi-purpose cuke in that one!
If the gopher hasn't found it (hidden in some wire fencing) I have one watermelon growing - a special one. Hope to have more soon.
The squash got burned up in the triple-digit heat when I was out of town for a few days. I'm nurturing two small vines of Autumn Glo back to life, and still have Seminole, Tahitian, and Musquee du Provence limping along. Lost the Butterbush hills completely. So there's still some hope in that project, especially if frost comes late this year...
Was grateful for the rain until I realized that it was only enough to double the size of the weeds. The seed tick population seemed to double in size as well.
What started off as a stellar year for me when everyone else was having problems, has turned out disappointing near the end.
