Our local Copperative Extension had their annual plant sale on sat. They had a sign that said "Free Seed Potatoes With Any Purchase". Uh, did I hear free? lol I figured they's give us maybe a few Red Pontiac or Kennebec. I look at the list- 23 varieties!! And interesting ones at that, so now I have about 20 lbs of seed taters to plant. I took at least 6 of each type- Kurs Pink, Huckleberry, Atlantic, Green Mountains, Purple Majestic, Inca Gold, Daisy Gold, Kennebec, Chieftan, Colorado rose, Kalahdin, Mountain Rose, King Harry, Great North, Red Dale, Sheopdy, Adirondack Blue, Adirondack Red, Krantz, Carola, Gilroy, Catalina, Rose Finn Apple Considering I only spent a total of $3.50 for 3 plants (2 scented geraniums and an artemesia), I think I did pretty good. lol

I guess there is a huge difference in extension services across the country. They don't do anything remotely like that around here. Well, maybe just not in my county. The agent who just retired here was not at all liked, everyone wanted him to go, and now it is even worse. One of those 'be careful what you wish for' kind of things. It sounds like a great mix of varieties, you will have potatoes for every purpose.

We've grown several of those, and really liked them a lot. Let me know how your yields on King Harry and Carola go... we grew Carola 2 years ago, and loved it. But I got greedy and fell for a description of the King Harry as prolific, and switched last year. Didn't get as many potatoes. Let me know if you see an appreciable difference... I'm trying to decide if it was a growing issue or a variety issue.
Great score, for sure!!!

Such a deal! Wish I had more garden space to try such interesting potato varieties but my tomatoes won't share. ;D
My extension office doesn't seem to do much and is without a director occasionally. In 2001, I had to travel to the next county 35 miles one way to take MG classes.

Well, they only gave me one bag, so the varieties are mixed in there. I have no idea where I am putting them all. lol I always show up at this sale about an hr before it ends. Then its 1/2 price on everything. The ladies working there tried to be helpful, but I dont think they were master gardeners. Maybe just from the extension. I saw plants with no IDs and mismarked. And they seemed to have no clue.

Not to offend any here who may be 'Master Gardeners', but I think the extension service has tried to give a new definition to the word 'Master'.

Speaking of goverment sponsored potatoes, the canadian gene bank is planning on emptying its potato storage facilities. They end up trashed. So Jane, the lady there, is kind enough to look up some taters for me, along with the ones I ordered. She will try to send me the maximum available quantities. It is worth checking it out. And it should be thesame for my american friends, as they come with a phytosanitary certificate... and some in vitro... pgrc3.agr.gc.ca/order-ordre_e.htmlMichel

Sounds like you scored too, Mike! Blue said the Green Mountain did well for her and were tasty too.

Not only did I score big on the taters, but I won their little free raffle. So now I have a $20 gift certificate to one of the local fruit farms.

I've got hitchikers growing out of a potato tossed into the compost pile. Did I get a good deal too?
