I planted 5 seeds of Black Beauty. The seed was of undetermined age (it was a gift at Christmas from someone who couldn't remember how long she had the seed??). I soaked them in tea for 24 hours and then planted them. I have 4 plants out of 5...
Husband won't eat eggplant. No idea what I'm going to do if I get a bumper crop, LOL

I planted 6 Japanese Eggplant today. I like these better than America varieties but you do not have to soak these to get the bitterness out.

I'm hoping to attend a plant sale next weekend at a Japanese grower's place. Maybe she will have something I can buy to do a comparison between Black Beauty and the smaller oriental varieties? Hope so.

We started planting it by mistake as i grab a wrong plant one year. I was getting Black Beauty and grabbed a Japanese instead. Nowadays Japanese is all we plant.

I do like a Black Beauty type for making stuffed eggplant the way my grandmother used to, but the Japanese varieties are less bitter, you're so right. I'm hoping to come up with a good stuffing recipe for the round mauves once I taste them.

Giardiniere, Pleez report back with a taste comparison once you've had the opportunity to try the three varieties. I'm particularly interested in a comparison between the Diamond and the Pingtung. TY
