Ever have a problem that just seemed to nag at you with no apparant solution? I have some fig cuttings in quart mason jars of perlite in the basement right now. Over the winter, I used orange plastic newspaper bags as "tents" over each individual jar, to keep the humidity levels high. That was fine while they were in cold storage, but since I brought them out into the heated area to try to get them to root, I had to find some way to get more light to them. After about two weeks of scratching my brain, it suddenly hit me last night. You know the metal canning rings you use to hold the lid on a canning jar until it seals? I took two of those for each jar and fastened them together top-to-top with electrical tape (just as a prototype). That way, I can screw a double-ring on the top of the jar with the cutting in it, and screw another jar ot top, upside down as a greenhouse dome or bell jar. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth spot-welding them together for a permanent joint. Whataya think?

Hmmm...Thats pretty clever. I don't think I would have ever thought of it. I'd be a little worried about the glass of the jar magnifying the intensity of the light coming through it. Let us know how it works out.

Yeah, I agree, I don't think I'd want to set one out in direct sunlight. I have them under flourescents with my seedlings right now. Assuming the cuttings strike roots, they'll eventually be transferred to the nursery bed of the garden for their first season, maybe under a shade canopy.

Unless you have a welder. Might try JB Weld. That's good stuff.
