Those really are pretty. Does the color continue through the tuber, or just the outside?

Frank they are way too pretty to be eaten... . Jewels is the most appropriate name for them! This reminded me to my globe artichoke experience, they were so pretty that I couldn't bring my self to harvest any...I know, I am silly in this aspect !

They're fun , these ullucus. Unfortunately most people seem to have problems growin them, I send quite a few and nearly everyone replies (if they do) they didn' t have a crop. And there are only about 400 + varieties in the cipotato germplasm ordering system ;D ;D ;D ;D They're so amazingly divers, colours and shapes. The biggest tubers in the picture are about 8 cms long, I never saw them any longer than about 12 cm, I had a few 10 cm long tubers in the warm 2006 autumn (but that year I lost quite a bit of plants due to summer heat), but I'm happy if they grow up to 8 cm. Some varieties are also more productive than others, they're being selected in South American gene banks, like cipotato or Santa Catalina, for a bigger crop. Ullucus is one of the Andean tubers that is not really threatened, with potatoes off course. The other ones, mashua and oca and... are less and less grown, they are still associated with poor people, and seen as 'food for poor people'....

So, they taste like ''jewels'' hey!! That would mean, for a guy like me, that they taste awfull, as I HATE jewelry. I don't even wear a watch, and my wife, after me for years for an eternity ring, finally bought one for herself. So, that would mean it is an undesirable vegetable then... ;D Unless I get a more precise description, wine critic like or so, this is my official interpretation of the taste of ullucus.

my wife, after me for years for an eternity ring, finally bought one for herself. Bet you it seemed like an Eternity until she got the ring ;D I don't feel so bad now. I've been almost 6 years without a wedding ring. I quit smoking and gained a bit of weight Haven't been able to get my ring on since. He keeps complaining about the fact that I don't wear one, but like Michel, he hasn't taken action to remedy the situation. Perhaps I will have to follow Vivienne's example and go buy my owne Oh and back to the reason for this thread. Love the rainbow of colours, whatever they are?? I'm totally confused...
