A majority of the 500 we are trialing this summer are from that area Hristo... Don't cry my son, daddy has melon seeds for you if you want some ;D Then, I just can not wait for the results of your trials. ;D I'm growing 200-300 veggie varieties and it is very hard to evaluate each of them. Hand pollination of 30-40 melons and watermelons takes me a lot of time. 300 melons + X others... busy year for yours. Lets hope for perfect weather....

Trust me Hristo, I know what you mean. There is a reason I usually work on plant breeding as opposed to preservation!

I've looked at requesting seeds from GRIN, but they ask for my organization and I don't have one. Does anyone know if they will let some out anyway? Thanks, Pugs If GRIN does not know you or your organization, they are less likely to send you seed, but it depends upon what you are asking for. If you are asking for any common garden vegetables, they will probably decline your request. If you are asking for some obscure weed that no one wants but scientists, they will probably send it to you. They don't want to be used for free seed by gardeners who could be buying seeds from seed companies.

I am listing some of the ,melons i will grow this summer, I only hope I will have time to list them all. Peapod is growing 80, I have them all IDed and everything but I can't get the document, i.e. access it. I have a printed version of the mailing labels I made of them all, I'll see what I can do.
For the moment, here is a very partial list. as I said, it is possible I don't put it all here before the trials if I don't find the time. Otherwise I will edit and augment.
To that list should be added about 20 others from unknown places and our own little breeding experiments, melons from friends etc... and a precious one , MARYGOLD, that Tim sent me to augment seeds, it is an early canary type, fantastic long keeper. I grew it last year and was down to my last 5 seeds when Tim sent me some.
EDITED April 19
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009 MELON TRIALS
Here is a list of the melons trialed in 2009, mainly in Ontario and Minnessota, but there are many people at HG growing small numbers of them. Most are early, meaning 70 days or less, a lot are green fleshed, some of the europeans from Gatersleben are...what they are, we don't know really, but that is also why we do trials... the same goes for some spanish ones, we got a lot, and despite weaker than usual descriptions from Grin, it is permitted to guesstimate a good number of them will be winter keepers as they are the favorite type there by a large margin. In the case of most european, north american , asian and middle eastern melons, Grin descriptors where very complete and informative for the most. I'll see to send them as much pictures as I can.

Michel, the Snowy White #2 should be Snowy Sweet #2. I have listed it wrongly, even in the SSE Yearbook. Description says up to 15% Brix, which is quite high. Unfortunately the Chinese (East-Asian) melons do not perform well in my garden, so I can not reach their potential.

CMike, They are started and labled and all that fun horse doo doo has been tilled into their nice little area. I call it the melon haven! My husband is wondring if I have lost my mind to melons these past few days. I cannot wait to see and taste some of these little wonders of the world... Yes from all over the world! I can honestly say that I have only heard of white melons, other than the Cream of Sasketchewan water melon. I am piqued to say the least. I have got to go rest my back for I have dig at least 2-200' trenches for taters today. I am done for. Peapod

Very glad to hear that Michelle. And we all share the back pain, don't worry ;D And the 500 numbers are a bit down, once I cleared the Gatersleben-Grin doubles somewhere over 400 anyway...

michel, peapod, are you growing these from seed in the gardens or transplants? i thought you had a cold, short season up there...or are these cold thriving, short seasoned melons? ;D

Hello canadamike,
