The last time I visited the cipotato germplasm ordering system there was a small banner (only when you log in) saying distribution of Andean roots and tubers and solanum phureja is temporarly banned...I hope it changed already, back to normal..

Orflo, does the Mauka bloom late in the day like a "four o'clock"?

Mauka blanca, stems are green, leaves are unspotted, no red spots on them Mauka roja, stems are reddish, and the familiar red spots on the leaves are there as well, comparison between the three varieties: left: cipotato variety, in the middle mauka blanca, and on the right mauka roja

The plants look very similar though a bit greener than M. longiflora, which I'm growing this year for the first time. I'd never heard of Mirabilis being edible. By the way, M. longiflora seeds have the same "hand grenade" shape as those of M. jalapa but were about half again as large and a bit longer.

Germplasm is now available BUT:
CIP only distributes in-vitro plantlets for outside Peru requests.

I checked it, but when I login, I got the same message I used to get: all Andean Roots and Tubers are limited to Peru only, no shipping to other countries..We'll have to create our own varieties, I think...

Now I'm really envious, I would love to have the plant and seed resources that you have, does it flower and go to seed? I have been a fan of the lost crops of the Andes, and was able to grow some Maca plants before loosing them to mice. I plan to get some more seeds of them and plan to grow Yacon again, as I lost the whole plants to a late frost that caught me off guard. Mauka is another must get at some point. I have found that a lot of plants from the Andes have herbal uses along with being a nourishes food source, I wonder if Mauka is used in any herbal medicines like Yacon is? George W.

The plants grew again like mad last year, and I expected a big harvest of roots. However, mice seem to adapt quickly to food diversity and most of the roots were eaten, out of the 40 plants only five (smaller ones) came out completely unharmed, the other ones all lost some or even a lot of the roots, with only a trace of small teeth in the leftover parts....If it comes to new crops, these little guys seem to adapt quicker than most human beings...This year we'll try again, and I'll try to grow out some seedsas well, they do need a reduced daylight during summer for flowering, and longer than fourteen days. I've tried with fourteen days, flower buds appeared, and I suspected they would go on without the coverings, but , to my surprise, they didn't flower, the flower buds just disappeared...
