Welcome another Michigander. My family and I live in Lambertville, MI. Always glad to see another local.

You will have to make sure drainage is appropriate. I would spray the area you will clear with pickling vinegar a couple of times in the previous week to smoother the grass ( don't cut it before, the more grass blade to drink, the better the effect). It might not be dead by the time you take it out but it will be terribly weakened...

Many folks think I live in the UP when I use the nick NorthernMich or disclose my location as 45th Parallel....truth is I am a Troll. I live under THE bridge. IF you need to ask what bridge then you truly don't understand Michigan history or geographics I have three gardens in progression....fortunately I have almost 10 acres at my whim for expansion as I coordinate a community garden that supplies fresh vegetables and acts as a seed bank in my county. The produce is then distributed via a food pantry, located on the same acreage. I have a garden in the city just for tomatoes and digging up more grass in 2009. My homestead is on six acres and is all raised beds as it is one big chunk of limestone and clay. I have many homesteading projects there as well as a big polebarn and garage loft that serves as a home away from home...there is also a cabin in progress (well, not in winter). I have traded with many here and visit other forums as well and have over 500 varieties of tomatoes and am shooting for growing as close to 150 kinds in 2009. I will have dozens of squash and have some native corn and amaranth as grow out seed from 2008 saved. It's a nice place to hang out.

Glad to have you, Earl. Sounds like you should be more of a poster and less of a lurker. With that many projects, I am sure you will be able to contribute a lot of interesting information.
