Well, We had a bit of snow on the ground before this started, then yesterday afternoon it started with the freezing rain, kept that up all night. I was up at about 4 am, and everything was covered with ice. Then around 6 it started snowing, huge flakes that actually made a sound when they hit the ice. Took my daughter to work around 7 and the roads were snow covered but not really slick. You just had to know where the road was supposed to be. The electricity has flickered a few times, but not gone off. Sorry to hear about your peach tree Johno, I am sure there will be lots of trees damaged across a very wide area. The rafters in my greenhouse are bowed, I hope those of you with metal frames will be ok. I wonder if Alan's greenhouses and worm houses will make it. Hope so.

Well our electricity went off for about 4 hours. Our road is a SOLID sheet of ice...We made it to the end of the driveway in Dad's truck. But the driveway has about 7 or so inches total. An inch of which is ice. It was NO fun cleaning off the vehicles. Dad is off tomorrow...I'm SUPPOSED to go to work, however, I don't know yet if I'm going to try it. My car is a lumina, two wheel drive...etc...Dad's truck doesn't have four wheel drive, and he doesn't have to be out tomorrow at all...both factories were closed no electricity. My 16 year old Rose of Sharon is all slumped over in the weight of the ice. Made me want to cry. I think it'll be okay, but its just that its one that my Dad and I started from seed that came off of an ENORMOUS one that my grandma had.
So far as I know...there was no damage to the green house or wormhouse...etc. netting on the chicken coup did not make it. And there was a downed tree in the driveway that they had to clear because Alan's Dad is on the volunteer fire department in town. From what I understand there was much cussing coming from the green houses and chicken coups as Alan brushed the inside of the plastic to break the ice off...Multiple times...Was out doing it at 2 o'clock this morning. Also, apparently the truck tracks in the driveway make for an adequit doggie sled...as Alan went to feed the chickens this morning, Jimi went with him and got stuck in the tire tracks and ended up sliding about 15 feet down the driveway.

The weather just alternated between snow, sleet and freezing rain. So we only ended up with half a ft. I would have preferred all snow. It's alot lighter to shovel.
I heard there was 3in of ice in Arkansas. So we might not hear from John or Moonlily.

I heard from Moonlily after the ice storm and she was fine. Johno's area is the worst hit in Arkansas, although a friend of mine an hour north of him had a bit of ice, then a couple of inches of snow on top of that and has power.

Blue, there are still about 100,000 without power in north Arkansas.

I'm back on. We were without power for about 43 hours, and we were lucky. We listened to the radio at the news hours, and today the power companies said there were 350,000 without power in the general area, with some districts having as many as 98% without electricity. By the 5:00 news this afternoon, we had 65% of customers without power in this district - ours returned shortly thereafter. They were also saying that it would be Monday or Tueday before they had an estimate of how long it would take to get everyone's service returned. There were over 400 power poles broken in the Mountain Home area.
We had a similar ice storm a few years ago, so we were prepared for a few days like this. It also wasn't a surprise when a sound like a battle zone gradually built tempo through the first night. It was tree limbs cracking and crashing to the ground (or whatever they hit first) under the weight of the ice. We just had to wait until morning to assess the damage, but that didn't stop us from trying with a flashlight for a while. Again, we were lucky. An entire enormous elm tree crashed piece by piece all around and on the chicken barn, but only one small limb pierced it and no part of the frame was broken (and no animals hurt!) Well, except for the unfinished shed at the back - it was utterly demolished. Huge oak branches crashed all around and brushed against the main shed, but it is undamaged. There are a few branches resting against the house roof and a couple that broke near it and only fell a few inches before hitting it, but the house is unscathed. Very lucky and grateful for it.
Hope evertbody else is okay! Anybody unaccounted for?

Glad your OK Johno, we got it pretty bad here as well. I wasn't sure the greenhouses would make it through, but I stayed up pretty much all night the night and morning of the storm pushing ice and snow off of the greenhouses and chicken coop. Not much fun, but very little damage. The bird netting I had on the yards of the chicken coop gave way, but that's not a big deal really.
