I was heartened to read that Bioversity International ( www.bioversityinternational.org ) promotes crop breeding by groups of local farmers. They have a successful little project running in Nepal where a group of framers have been developing rice varieties better suited to their local conditions by utilising their traditional stock and some wild varieties. You can read about it in the 2008 edition of their annual magazine Geneflow.
