Starting Aprill 22, it will be illegal in Ontario to use A LOT of actually available pesticides for aesthetic purposes. No more weed and feed, round up etc...
The manager of the local hardware was in a state of confusion...what to do from now on???
He turned to me, and I had him negociate a distributorship agreement with my best supplier, HOMESTEAD ORGANICS. They provide anything anybody can need for natural fertilizing and pest control, all organic.
I'll use my newspaper's column as a vector for change. We will publish a 12 pages special insert on April 23 and on May 2, we will hold a big ''ORGANIC LAWN , LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN DAY'' right downtown on the Hardware's lot. We have the support of the town's environment committee, which I funded in 1992, and want to make a big splash.
Alfalfa meal and corn gluten will be at the center of the strategy for lawn care. I'll probably have some custom mixes ( seed meal, calphos, greensand etc...) ready by then. Already, my alflafa treated lawn, even if I did it way too late in the fall when I moved, looks like it will be green sooner than the neighbor's, so pictures will be taken soon.
This is a big opportunity for the movement, I don't want to miss it. I already get a lot of demand for advice through the column, and now 2 of the local nurselries supply heirloom vegetables ( tomatoes) I recommend instead of the usual hybrids.
If anybody has advice, recipes of easy to do dry mixes for fertilization, I welcome any help.

Any chance at a copy of the insert, Michel. Even if it is in French, that would be worth getting the old French-English dictionary out for.

It sounds wonderful! Is it possible to arrange to have a couple of natural gardening classes that run that day? Or maybe allow people to sign up for something a little bit down the road that would allow them to get help with things that they will buy now?
Fulenn
What column?

Thanks for the idea Fullen, I think we will follow up on it. Not that day, because it is outside, but it is really a wonderful idea. I am glad I had the idea to ask for help here... Fullen, I write a column in a regional newspaper on gardening... it is in french, but the 12 pages insert will be bilingual. The newspaper can be read on the net. www.mousquetaires.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=17
