I'm a beginning gardener and plan to put our six or eight tomato plants this year.
I live in Oklahoma City, zone 7a. We have very hot and dry summers.
Can some of you suggest varieties that might do well in my area and are common enough for the local nurseries to carry the plants.

hmmm, as far as your zone I'm not real sure, I would say if you want to play it safe this year to try some of the old standby's. Rutgeurs, Jubilee, big boy, better boy, roma. I'll do some research and get you a better list soon. -Alan

Alan, glad your over your illness.
The Porter tomato was developed by Porter & Sons Seed Co. in Stephenville, TX only a few miles from where I was raised. The tomato is a cherry type with about 1 to 2 ounce fruit. As I remember them they were delicious straight from the vine.
There is also the Improved Porter which produces tomatoes of about 3 to 4 ounces. If I remember correctly they were good as slicers, in salad and for canning.
They had to have been very heat and drought tolerant to have produced as well as I remember.

I think I might actively seek this one out as a last ditch effort this year, it sounds intriguing enough. Know of any good seed sources?
