Nope not horrible being a foot, but cut it into smaller piece to make more surface area for leeching out the ingredients. I usually let the cuttings soak for about 10 minutes, and then pot up but with my forgetful nature I have left in the solution until the roots were forming about a week later.
As for your cuttings - in the windows - use the north window, but at this time of the year I just put them in the shade on the north side of the house, out of direct sunlight. As for the liquid, I put in a canning sealer (the narrow mouthed mason jars 1 pint (500 ml) or quart ( 1L.) size and use it repeatedly over the course of a couple of weeks and then replace the entire contents. If you use these jars you can just close them when not in use with their lids and rings.

Fabulous. I've got the brew in the cooling stages now. I have enough that I might try a bit of an experiment with the rosemary and lavender. That being allowing the sprigs to root in the solution. My sons (7 and 9) will be thrilled to practice their skills of observation on such an experiment!

Nearly forgot! About how long should I leave them in pots before planting out?

Check them (lavender and rosemary) in a month or so by tipping them out of the pot and see how the roots are doing. Also leave one of the rosemarys in the pot and bring it into the house in the fall if you like fresh rosemary all winter. Put it in the south window.

Thanks Val! I'll probably bring some in next year. This year I'm trying to get a bunch "made" for borders in various places. Like around the dog kennel! The lavender is to companion with the truffle trees. I also need them to do their thing as bug repellent. Today was Japanese beetle open season. I'll be fighting them off the grapes until I get hyssop and more 4 o'clocks going. ::sigh:: I love being so busy, I can't understand how I survived as a bored teen! Karen, those photos are awsome! Thank you so much. I've got the willow tea made up but by the time it had cooled down, that train was derailed. I'll be working it tomorrow though. I had my little lobsters to entertain today. Too much fun at the beach yesterday, I'll probably have them running around here tomorrow as well. They can't hang with wearing a shirt, poor babies.

OK, got 12 wee little canes in the dirt. The boys helped a lot, stripping leaves, dipping and tucking them into their new little dirt beds. I just love developing new skills and knowledge. I'm not going to get to the lavender and rosemary today. Instead we planted flowers and did some weeding. I also planted a second round of green peas. I adore green peas and this is the first year they've grown well enough to actually cook into a dish! I'm hoping I can extend their season a month!
