Hi everyone. I'm trying to liven up my side porch with some plants, but don't have much soil space. Does anyone have any good ideas for plants that do well in pots and would be located in a shady area? Bonus points for plants that have a beautiful fragrance Thanks in advance for your input. Patty

I keep scented geraniums on the side deck. They get a bit of morning light, but it's mostly shady. My personal favorite is the peppermint (pelargonium tomentosum). The leaves are like velvet.

Tea geranium is also lovely but I've seen it only once. The leaves are like lace and it can be used for tea but I have no idea what the qualities are. It was a long time ago I saw it.

I vote Corsican Mint. It's a low grower, and could be used in addition to less fragrant but more showy plants. Corsican Mint has a super intense mint fragrance... it's the mint used to make true creme de menthe.

Got seeds Lav? I'm desperate for some decent mints!

You know, MnJ, I have never had any of mine go to seed. I wonder why that is? I'll check with a few folks to see if I can find any, though. I think you'd like Mentha requienii. Here's a link to a picture... it really doesn't look anything like more common varieties of mint. Wow! The carpet green? That would be perfect mulch! If I could get it started, I wonder how well it would kill off the centipede grass I find so distressing in my life!
Interesting about the seed though. It might be because you would have to "grow" it from cuttings? Fascinating! Not to mention lovely.

Seed won't come true is the reason you won't find seeds offered often. I have a few mints, apple, lavender, kentucky colonel, chocolate, a few others that I can't think of right now. Funny, but for me mints don't do well in a pot. That's weird because you just about can't kill them in the ground. Corsican mint is one of the loveliest smelling, but I doesn't live well for me here.

What are the issues that keep it from doing well in your area Karen? I'm thinking I'm in a slightly cooler version of where Lav is... What's your humidity like there Lav? It's a misery here a good part of the time.

I love this link, Lav! It has so many fragrant plants that my nose is dying to smell some of them! Thanks for sharing.

Me too! Me too! I love mints and they do well for me for some odd reason - I can rip them out of the ground and replant them in the middle of summer and still have them grow, even in pots. If you find yourself with any extra seed to trade, Lav, I would be very appreciative. Patty
