It should be okay. If the water gets algae, you'll know it' s getting too much sun. It depends a bit how opaque the material the barrels are made from is...

i use a 350 gallon container incased in a metal tube frame, liquid nitrogin ferterlizer came in it, my roof gutter system is conneted to it via some pvc pipes and fittings, this water i use in the cabin, flushing the john, sinks shower. i use it for cooking an making coffee and tea also, when the rain dont come often enough i supliment water from my creek into is which comes from my catfish pond which is spring fed. but one would be surprised on how much water comes off your roof with just a small shower.

I'm always pleasantly suprised how quick our water catchment systems fill up with just the slightest little rain shower.

very true, i get a few gallons just from a heavy morning dew on my roof .. or a frost on it as it melts. every lil bit helps especially when its water you use for your cooking an bathing etc .. people take water for granted sometimes but when u kinda have to watch every drop you have in a hot dry summer you learn to pinch it a lil bit.

During the summer, I will empty the livestock's waterbowls into buckets every day. I use them to water all the plants on my deck.

The white barrels are sometimes a little translucent so some light can get in. Metal or the blue barrels are totally light-blocking. I have used the blue barrels for years, I prefer them to collect drinking water. I never know when my ideas might change, so I started out siphoning the water with a 1/2 inch hose like for wine-making, didn't want to poke holes in the barrels. It works for me, especially if mosquitos, pollen or anything gets in the water, the hose can take water from off the bottom or near the top.
