"We were all gophers once"; that's a nasty take on evolution.

Our jiaogulan is getting a bit weedy, in and around the greenhouse; also, our winters aren't what they used to be.

I started 7 leaf Jiaogulan this year. It appears to have thicker rhizomes and be weedier. Jiaogulan from seed starts out bitter and gradually gets sweeter and more tonifying as the years go on.

With the five leaf variety that I have, I can pull the stem up easily where it roots as it runs along the ground. I started 7 leaf from Chinese seed last year, and in one season some of the plants grew 3-4 meters long in multiple directions even across lawn being mowed down. When I dug them up to transplant I noticed the stem couldn't just be pulled up so easily, and instead of being anchored by thin fibrous roots it was anchored by branching rhizomes at least a cm thick.
