If any of you decide to delve into the world of poultry breeding, particularly turkey breeding www.porterturkey.com is a good source not just for poults but if you go through and read the individual listings you will get a good idea of the genetic blueprints needed in breeding a new or existing variety.
As of right now my genetic base includes slat blue, self black, black spanish, bourban red, royal palm, standard bronze, naragansette and as of today two broad brested bronze hens.
The color thing should be fairly easy to predict except in cases which involve Slate Blue as parents considering that they do not breed true to type. All of the above birds however should give me access to just about all of the possible genetic combinations, however color isn't as important to my breeding work as is size and number of weeks to finish along with fertile egg percentage and ability to breed naturally.
I've added the two broad brested bronze turkeys to the flock as hens for egg laying capacity as well as size. Since I will loose some size from standards breeding to Royal Palms which are a smaller type turkey I wanted to make sure I added back some genetics into the flock to make up for this shortfall since in a way my poultry breeding work will mimic my plant breeding work. I have created a gene pool for mass crossing and maximum diversity in selection.
A standard Tom can and will breed a broad breasted hen, but not the other way around.
In a few years I hope to establish some new lines of turkeys to introduce to the world of poultry, time will tell!
