Toys?? The only toys mine get are dinner treats like a smattering of grass clippings as a side dish if they are shut indoors. Now Turkey Poults sometimes need toys. They can be terrible little carnivores and when bored easily become Cannibalistic. Sometimes I put aluminum pie plates and small mirrors for them to amuse themselves with so that they don't kill each other. But no, my chicken babies have never had toys. I suppose if you only have 5 or 6 to play with that would be alright. They are after all, your first Fowl. But I'm not really set up for toys. Let me see. Four buildings. 7 rooms in one. 15 compartments in another. How many toys would I need??

Yeah, when I was saying toys, I was really thinking more along the lines of sod clumps or perch sticks, not so much teddy bears or something...
Anyway, I needed to do some work down in the veg plot, so I made a peep playpen out of some chicken netting and a couple of barrel hoops I found down there. (The veg plot is a veritable archeological dig... I've found tea pots, crockery, abalone shells and arrows as well as the desiccated remains of a barrel. Weird.) Anyway, the dogs, the chicks and I went down to the garden for the morning. I let them scratch around in the playpen while I worked. Had to keep a weather eye on the dogs, though... the babies sound WAY too much like squeaky toys to leave that unsupervised!

Perches would be good for them. Blue says a hardboiled egg is a nice treat for them once in a while.

I put some perches in the peep playpen down in the veg garden... they are still deciding whether they want to use them... but I did find an old sunflower head down there, too, and that was an enormous hit... lots of baby scratching going on, and lots of excitement.
The brahmas are dealing with a pasty butt issue, but I'm sure they'll be fine eventually. All of them will fall asleep in our hands, even if we've flipped them onto their backs to check for poop. Too goofy. Of course, they're all pets, really, like Blue said. Spoiled just like the dogs and the cat. ;D

Thats so cute. They will be a fun part of the family. I did have my pets as well. My Polish bantam that sat on my shoulder as I walked around. And other breeds that I really enjoyed walking as they strolled around the yard. Chickens can be fun, HOnest.

Oh my God I totally have a favorite already... one of the Brahmas, I named her Violet. She peeps and peeps if she can hear or see me, until I pick her up and lay her on her back and rub her belly. Then she falls asleep. Hypnotized chickie! It is the funniest thing... even Andre was laughing, and he's not a big one for the chicks.
Tonight I gave them some oatmeal to hopefully counteract some of the pasting up that we're seeing. You'd think I stuck my hand in there with some peep crack on my palm. They were loving it. Violet had her share, then hunkered down in the middle of my palm (on top of the oatmeal, mind you) and took a nap.

The chicks moved to the coop last night... out of the sunroom brooder. Andre and I went out to check on them after dark, and they had all squeezed out of a hole between the door and the wall of the building, and were huddled together on the ground in the chicken yard. We rounded them up and put them on their roost, where they stayed.
This morning, when I got home from taking the kids to school, they had squeezed out again, and were clamoring for treats.
So, that hurdle's jumped. Now, keep your fingers crossed that they're all girls.
