Johno, guess you shoulda found a way to save some of the extras they were giving ya I'm no better though. I say I'm going to freeze extras when we have them to use for baking when needed this time of year. Ya right, lol Our standards are just starting as well. The old broads are returning to lay and a few of the youngsters are commencing to lay. We have a fridge full of bantam eggs, but somehow, eating 6 eggs instead of 2 puts me in mind of instant heart attack.

My hens want to go out, even though its in the 30's. But there is about 4 in of snow covered by 1/4 in of ice. and i don't want them out anyway. I saw the perrigine hanging around, looking for rabbits. And the hens are the Barred Rock- they are easy to spot.

BackYardChickens Forum
I thought this was an old tale from my "pawpaw" BUT.... when our girls started to slack on the laying he told me to go and buy "hot pepper" . He meant ground cayenne .... I bouth it at wal-mart it is 2/1.00 with the spices. (I bought the cheap stuff) I bought 6 bottles and mixed 4 of them with some cornmeal. Well believe it or not in just a few days they were laying better so I used the other 2 bottles and they were back on track in no time!!! Have you ever heard of this???

I believe on earlier pages in the thread, CFF and BLRH both mentioned adding hot pepper to the poultry feed.
Down, curious why you are feeding cornmeal instead of cracked or whole corn.

Patrick, they sometimes take a couple of weeks to begin following a regular production schedule. It will happen, don't worry.
But I must ask, are your birds free range?? If they are, and they are new to the art of egg laying, they could very well be laying in the grass or behind a stump, under a cedar bush...any place but in a nesting box. Keep them indoors until they learn otherwise. Or can you keep them indoors at least until early afternoon when they had laid most of their eggs in the nest boxes?
